Works well - allowing for the "known bugs" - even on EDGE!
Using a first generation iPhone, two days ago I tested this with a 24kbps MP3 stream from wncw.org (their lo-fi option... they also offer a 128kbps MP3 stream, suitable for Wi-Fi or 3G). Over the course of a 20-minute drive the player never once lost the stream, and even seamlessly switched between my home network and EDGE, once I drove out of range. Very nice!
Suggestions:
- Make the Play/Pause button larger. No real need for a Stop button per-se, as pause effectively does the same thing, and closing the app stops the stream from buffering.
- Once a stream is playing, go to a "Now Playing" screen with more info about the stream, so that the "Playing..." line doesn't have to keep scrolling. If people want to change the channels, they could then simply click on the list view to navigate away.
- It would be really nice if there was a way to add "Station ID" artwork for each stream. Perhaps allow a secondary URL to an image, which would then be stored locally once loaded the first time? Entering a new URL for that particular station artwork could then cause the image to be reloaded/overwritten in the local copy.
Perfect except for one bug
This is an awesome free app that is almost perfect except for one glaring issue: if you lock the iPhone (either manually or AutoLock), Fstream stops playing! This is unacceptable as it will drain your battery very quickly, and forces you to disable AutoLock for extended listening.
However, there are some great features, such as buffer size control and pause handling - awesome! If they can fix the lock playback problem, this will be the best webradio app on the AppStore by far - and it's FREE!
WiFi connection only ??
Would have given it 5 stars, but can only stream when connected to my WiFi network. It appears App will not stream using the 3G phone network. Or am I missing a config option? Other then that and the sleep issue, Excellent App. If those 2 things get fixed, I would $donate$.
