Description

Fonix iSpeak (TM) English is a hands free voice driven phone dialing application for your Apple iPhone (original or 3G) using Fonix' advanced speech recognition neural network technology.

The current version, 1.4, should fix the crashing issues with 3.0.

Apple has added a "Push to Call" button to every application that makes phone calls from the application in OS 3.0. In beta testing 3.1, it looks like Apple removed this, so when Apple releases OS 3.1, this problem will be gone. (Not 3.01, but 3.1.)

If you have any unresolved problems, please send us a note and make sure that our replies are not being blocked by your spam filter.

Simply launch iSpeak and speak the number you wish to dial or the name of a person in your AddressBook followed by a location (e.g., home, work, or mobile: "Call John Smith at work"). With iSpeak, you don't have to continue to press a button on the iPhone. Text-to-speech (TTS) confirms the information, so you don't have to look at your iPhone to make sure you are calling the right number.

No training or enrollment is required for iSpeak - it provides high accuracy "out of the box", even in noisy conditions - no lengthy recording process for each contact.

Fonix iSpeak runs directly on your iPhone, which speeds up the calling process. You won't be waiting for a server to respond or worry about maintaining a server connection (especially with the original iPhone). In addition, your private contact information never leaves your phone for recognition on a server.

The iPhone does not allow third party applications to access Bluetooth(TM) APIs. We will provide this support when Apple opens the APIs. You can still use iSpeak and a Bluetooth headset. You first launch iSpeak and speak your command into the phone. When the phone begins dialing, the Bluetooth headset will turn on.

iSpeak provides a true hands-free experience giving you greater convenience and safety when using your iPhone.

If you have any problems with Fonix iSpeak, please contact us at ispeaksupport@fonix.com. We want to know about your issues so that we can continue to make iSpeak the best hands free application on the iPhone.

If you like iSpeak, please review our product and share your experiences with others so that we can continue to grow our market penetration and further enhance and add new features.

NOTE: In loud speaker mode, the phone is slightly slower, wait until the red microphone appears before speaking.

If you are using iSpeak to recognize phone numbers that are not 7,10 or 11 digits according to the North American Numbering Plan (NAMP), you must select "No Specific Pattern" the "Phone Number Patterns" section of the "Fonix iSpeak User Preferences in the iPhone settings.

For those reviewers who are having problems, with "yes and no", be sure to wait until the red microphone pops up to speak. You must speak after the iPhone microphone audio turns on. In our tests, this has fixed this issue.

Before using iSpeak, we suggest that you review the contacts in your AddressBook and make sure they are formatted correctly and remove symbols from the first and last names as well as the company fields.

If you try to use iSpeak with your OS 2.2 phone muted, iSpeak will crash. Apple made a change to their audio in OS version 2.2. We have a fix for this along with many new features in review by Apple now.

Use iSpeak to autodial or voicedial your contacts.

Best Voice Dialer So Far

I, as well as other reviewers, have purchased every voice dialing app offered on the Apple store. Voice This works fairly well but lacks true voice dialing features. After reading about the iSpeak application and seeing the video demo on the Fonix website I thought this could be the voice dialer we all have been waiting and hoping for. I usually wait for several reviews to post before purchasing a new app; especially one that costs close to $15. I purchased iSpeak immediately the day it was released; against my usual good judgment! With excitement, I clicked the iPhone 3G icon and clicked the next button. To my dismay, before my contacts even began to load, iSpeak Crashed and my iPhone went back to the home screen. I tried restarting iSpeak several times. No success; continued to crash back to the home screen. Believe it or not, I was more upset about iSpeak not working than about losing the money spent on it! I had so anticipated that iSpeak would be the perfect voice dialer. What a disappointment! I immediately fired off an email to Fonix Corp. listing all my grievances. Now, on to the good news!
Fonix responded within hours to my email with info that completely resolved all crashing issues. iSpeak is now performing beautifully; just like in their video! I love this app and am awaiting an update for Bluetooth support which will make iSpeak a pretty near perfect Voice Dialing solution. Anybody that has experienced crashing issues with iSpeak, please try the following before giving up on this wonderful app.
In their response email, Fonix states that iSpeak encountered some problems recognizing certain contacts that contain characters during their Beta testing. When I removed all character signs from my contacts that had them, iSpeak loaded all my contacts instantly. Also, if you have a questionable contact that you suspect may be causing iSpeak to hang up you can do the following. Go into your contacts edit screen; scroll to the note entry field; enter a hyphen character
- like this into the note field. iSpeak does not recognize any contact with the hyphen character in the note field and will ignore it. I have a few contacts with characters that I rarely call; for these I inserted the hyphen so iSpeak would not recognize them. I only have about 150 contacts. It only took a few moments to fix the problem contacts. I realize that many of you have up to a thousand or more contacts. I recommend that you take whatever time required to clean up your contacts; you will be delighted with the results. Again, after doing the above "fixes", iSpeak has performed flawlessly for me. Fonix sent me a follow up email apologizing for any inconvenience relating to iSpeak and they also asked me to provide them with info on any contacts I have that may have caused problems with the app. They welcome all feedback as stated in their email to me. They will endeavor to fix any and all problems in future updates. I applaud Fonix for their speedy response to my email. Give this developer a fair chance. If you have issues with iSpeak; give them a call or send an email. Their contact info is plainly marked on the Fonix website.
And just for the record, I do not work for Fonix Corp. I give this app Five stars for working beautifully now and also for the gracious response received from Fonix.

Been waiting months and the wait was worth it

This will become the premier voice dial application. Respected company developed other voice applications for other platforms. It works as promised. Apple needs to allow Bluetooth activation ASAP; someone is going to get into an accident trying to make a call while driving. If iSpeak works as well with Bluetooth then this application will be perfect.

Works Beautifully, Promises Much More To Come

Here is one product with great credentials that lives up to its preproduction promise. It is amazing they can pack such a powerful speech recognition engine into such a small app and with the processor of the iphone. The promise is that it can be enlarged to work with other programs and apps on the iphone.
