Customer Reviews
Great!
For those of you about to buy this, you need to understand a few things, which clearly most of the negative reviewers don't:
1. WunderRadio and their partner RadioTime do NOT stream stations themselves. WunderRadio relies on volunteers to stream their local weather station for WunderGround.com, so they have no control over which stations stream and which ones don't. And RadioTime uses the stream found on the station's website. People complaining about missing stations should check the stations website to see if they actually stream online first, and even if they do stream, it's possible they stream with a format that WunderRadio cannot play, like streaming rtmp flash or a stream that uses encryption. And for those complaining about buying it only to find out that their favorite station is not available, they do offer a link to check if your station is available, which you should have used before purchasing this app.
2. As for performance issues, the thing is mobile internet speeds are not constant, especially when you are in motion, they can fluctuate from 3G like speeds to speeds slower than dial up. Apps like Pandora stream stations themselves and use multibitrate technology to compensate for fluctuations in connection speed, WunderRadio uses streams from the stations websites, and it's very rare for them to include the same protection, so you may experience problems with stations that stream at higher bitrates.
3. As for people complaining about the lack of music when you leave the application, Apple does not allow downloaded applications to run in the background after you leave them. This would likely limit support of an alarm clark function too, since Apple doesn't allow applications to store a timer that will allow an application to startup on it's own.
4. As for complaints about sports blackouts, blame the leagues, NFL.com and MLB.com charge users for online streaming, meaning they'll sue if a station streams it for free, some other leagues allow streaming of games but charge the station extra if they want to, so some stations black them out.
5. And for the person saying WunderRadio is spelled wrong, look at the name of the company who made this app and take a guess where they got the Wunder name from...
6. On a side note Apple should really give the developer a chance to dispute a negative review before posting it since there's way too many instances of people bashing this product for issues that are no fault of the actual app.
Keeping these outside limitations in mind, WunderRadio is a great product. One thing most of you fail to realize is that WunderRadio uses a custom coded media player that supports way more streaming formats that the majority of streaming stations use, giving you a greater selection of stations, unlike most other applications that only support mp3 and leave you with a limited number of stations. I also love the ability to enter a custom URL, which I use to stream music remotely from my private shoutcast server. The Last.FM integration is great to find information about the current artist, but keep in mind that not all stations embed song titles into their streams, and many don't follow the standard for including song data so the integration will not work for all stations. One option that I feel is lacking is the ability to add a default location for local radio by zip/postal code, which will be useful in cases where GPS isn't available, like on some wifi connections.
Wowwww
I was skeptical at first to pay 6 bucks for an app no one else reviewed yet, because I was already using FStream which is free. One thing that I didn't like about FStream was its interface, but hey, it was free. WunderRadio though, takes all of the guess work out of things and WOW Scanners too!?! I was sold and I'm loving it. Going through the process of making all of my favorites so now I can keep listening to programs when I get out of my car.
Who knew I would ever pay $400 for a radio... Thanks Apple and Thanks Weather Underground for this terriffic app!
Not Worth The Time To Download
I thought, "At last, I can listen to radio on my Iphone!". I was wrong. The idea is great, however when using the app, I quickly realized that this is NOT for long-term listening. Regardless of where I am in the world, I can only listen to about 1 1/2 to 2 songs before it begins to buffer. Afterwards, it comes back on briefly before it buffers again and ultimately quits working. I then log back on to a different station only to repeat this process once again. This app will be deleted if I cannot get a response as to how this will be fixed and I will be requesting a full refund of the amount I paid. If it can be fixed to my satisfaction, then I will definitely give it 5 stars!
