"What there hasn’t been is any real innovation in the genre as it is played on the iPhone - and this is what makes Zombie Attack! absolutely brilliant…"

"Personally, i like the tilt controls. It allows me to play without the obstruction of my short fat fingers, not to mention all the grease from the chips i’m eating while gaming."

Way too much fun... hours easily wasted (YAY!)

For .99 cents, this is a great time killer. Already hours that could have been spent say... spending time with family-- Gone! Poof! All my focus is on surviving the zombie apocalypse playing out on my iPhone. Days later, I'm still playing and still attempting to survive the zombie onslaught. It's something to consider, since I'm not a serious gamer, that the time spent wastin' zombies with axes, flamethrowers, guns and cannons was time well spent!

The other zombie killin' game, Zombie Invasion, certainly has its merits (that spooky music for instance)... but it's definitely more along the lines of an FPS arcade game, iPhone style. It's a nice game with well done graphics and sound, but for my money Zombie Attack! is the more nuanced and less repetitious game, though it can also feel slightly repetitious after a while. It's definitely a bit more inventive than ZI, and a very clever fort defense game that doesn't skimp on the gore factor in the least.

For comparison's sake, Zombie Attack! is the superior game of the two (though both apps are well worth the purchase for gamers and zombie fans alike... Whack The Dead and Math Zombie apps aren't being considered here). ZA! offers better graphics and the kind of animation that indulges the Adult Swim side of Cartoon Network geeks... Crimson gore splatters and sprays onto the controls, the zombies and human are well drawn for small scale iPhone graphics and offer small, humorous details that won't go unnoticed. For fans of George A. Romero, these are your slow moving, messed up, lurching zombies who take (ahem) realistic hits... arms and legs (and heads) go a-flyin' in various directions, bodies explode or are turned into rotting puree on the abandoned lot. After a while of getting whacked, shot, immolated, blow to bits or bitten you'll notice the undead and human slow down a bit (not to be confused with the one serious flaw of this game... more on that later) due to their injuries and actually seem to limp across the field. It's a very nice touch... human avatar noticably limps around when wounded, and this is but a mere example of the level of detail IUGO engineers have put into the game.

As for gameplay... during play you'll notice the zombies and the human avatar have little life meters, while the fort has its own meter and also takes some well animated destruction. You'll never doubt where you stand during the course of the game. The colors and contrast are pretty wonderful all around, the use of turret-style weapons (and color coded placement hints) lots o' fun, while the timing and strategy methods allowed give a wide variety to the course of play. Then there's that teeth gnashing, slightly frustrating dollar counter that takes a while to add the money up for new weapons making for a nerve-wracking and challenging experience in the way a rundown clock would not... Very nice touch. All of this makes for fantastic gameplay.

And yet... one serious quibble.

The game noticably bogs down during play and is a total memory hog. During startup, during gameplay, even after rebooting the iPhone, the warning for low memory almost never fails to appear. During gameplay the sight of so many weapons on the field, all upgraded and multiple rotting corpses lumbering along makes the game g.o....v...e..r..y...s....l...o.....w. It drags the play down and makes achieving a high score past 1500 more of a drudgery than anything else. At some points the game simply lacks the snap and smoothness of the best iPhone games in terms of memory usage and physical game play. Hopefully on the next update this will be addressed.

As for complaints from other reviewers, guess it depends on your point of view, but I really enjoyed the way the game uses the accelerometer to move the avatar, the way the game challenges you by making you decide where to place turrets on the fly. No, this is not the average tower defense game. It's more like a little B-grade horror movie for the iphone that you control... Much more Night of the Living Dead than a straight ahead tower defense strategy game. Everything about the game points toward a geek fest rather than a pure gamer's delight.... the 50's style horror graphics for the icon and menu give the game a great theme and film genre to play with while allowing for hours of gaming fun... but then, if you're one of those serious gamers that must have a tower defense game be exactly like Fieldrunners, than spend the extra cash and play that, and be happy. For nut-jobs like me who adore a good zombie movie and geek out on the idea of a game that mimics the style of an old horror film, this is the game for me! In my opinion, IUGO did a heckuva job on this, and a measly buck (even in this rotten economy) the game is well worth the purchases as-is. I'd be shocked if they changed any of the core concepts of this game rather than simply upgrading and fine tuning it.

So, other than that, this game flat out rocks... Buy it. After PocketGuitar, one of my favorite apps.

Very nice

What I particularly like about this, is that the attackers can have different levels of damage, versus going straight to death like most video games. For example, the zombie can be decapitated, and he'll run around the field randomly.

Great game

It's a great game and just as fun as Fieldrunners in my opinion. Gameplay is similar to Pixeljunk Monsters on PS3.
