Nice design, great potential, not there yet

Let me say this first: I really liked "Lose It!" and still believe it has a great potential, so I do hope the developer keeps working on it.

After spending about a week with this app I decided to give up. So, let me share my experiences, because some of the shortcomings are not so obvious at a first glance.

Here are the things I liked about it:
1. Really, really, simple and easy app. I figured it out in no time, so - kudos to the developer!
2. Attractive, well designed interface, nice colors and cute custom icons. Very easy on the eyes!
3. Food database seemed quite large, larger than most calorie counters.
4. Stable, has not crashed on me yet. Again, kudos to the developer!
5. FREE! Can't complain about the price :)

Having said all that, here are the shortcomings that I ran into:
1. Food database turned out to be smaller than it looked initially and does not have many foods I eat, like Panera, Amy's, NutriSystem, or Vitamin Water... It only has about 40 restaurant chains.
2. The app is very simple and easy to start with, but the downside is that it is quite limited. For example, for custom foods it only allows calories but no other nutrients, it does not show nutrients for the day, it tracks only weight, but no other measurements, does not have progress or nutrient charts, no water tracking, and so on.
3. The most important thing for me - food logging - turned out to be taking more time than I was expecting (after test driving another diet log app).
4. Last, but not least, it does not sync with a web site - after a week with "Lose It!" I just cannot imagine myself keeping a food log on my iPhone only, with its on-screen keyboard for the next 6 months.

So, in the end, after trying to use it religiously for a few days, I gave up. I still think "Lose It!" is better than most calorie counters, but for now I give it only two stars, until the shortcomings are addressed. Great potential, though!

UPDATE 3/19/09: Just checked version 1.1, released back in December. The food database is still lacking and getting out of date on many items (even McDonald's!), 7 nutrients and weight chart added, still no web site sync. No major changes, few minor tweaks. C'mon guys, you can do better than this!

Great App. A few updates would make it perfect for my needs.

After searching and trying many similar applications for my iPhone, I have found Lose It! to be the one that is staying on my iPhone.
It really is a quality product and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to keep track of their diet and fitness.

I especially love the "Net Calories for the Day" section.
The only requests that I would have for future versions would be:

1. the ability to directly edit the calories burned for each exercise. Sometimes I use different settings on my stationary bike that result in differing calories burned for the same time period.

2. give the weight tracker more detail than just whole pounds. My home scale reflects weight to the tenth pound and it would be great to have this accuracy in Lose It!

3. an application badge showing the remaining calories left for the day, so that you can see how many calories you have left for your your daily goal without having to open the app.

Overall, a wonderful application, and one that will get much use.

Lost 20 lbs. So far!!!

20 lbs. GONE!!! I've been using this app for a couple of months, and like so many other reviewers, I had no idea just how many calories I was putting into my body everyday. It was absurd!

This is easily the best free app out there for those of us looking to lose a little weight. It's completely changed the way I eat.

UPDATE: I have now lost a total of 41 lbs. and have gone from a pants size 38 to 34. I started at 239...now I'm 198.

UPDATE X2: I've lost 50 lbs.
