Verdict: The best game on the platform, period.

When Aurora Feint: The Beginning arrived in the App Store for FREE, nobody could understand how such an addicting and intriguing twist on the classic Puzzle Quest could be given away for FREE. Then it became apparent that rather than the work of a large commercial team with ample resources like Electronic Arts or Sega, it was just two recent Berkeley grads working tirelessly on fixing the many bugs and stability issues evident in the initial release of The Beginning, which really amounted to their free public beta and stability vetting ground for this release of The Arena.

Fast forward 6 months -and no doubt tens of gallons of Starbucks/Redbull- later to the release of Aurora Feint II: The Arena, and you understand where the developer time went. The game stability is greatly improved, while the game play and the MMO features are evolved much beyond the initial release of The Beginning. First off, the visuals of The Beginning were great, but The Arena pushes the Apple mobile platform to a whole new level. The particle and visual effects of The Beginning are remarkable, especially give the number of visual elements on-screen at any one time. If you like pretty things, The Arena will not disappoint.

With The Arena, you also have the ability to not only interact with other players online, including in-game realtime chat, but you can also summon a "ghost" to stay and compete with other players in the online "battleground" when you are not online. You can amass friends through a code-exchange system (which doesn't access your address book, like The Beginning 1.0 release shortly did before the feature was rightfully pulled by Apple) and view world-wide stats for all players. Granted, this initial 2.0 major release showcases many changes from The Beginning and while seem to be a few fixable, yet annoying issues that the developers have already began working on (as read on their forums at aurorafeint.com), all in all, this is a wonderful continuation of where The Beginning left off and I don't look forward to the many hours of productivity I will loose to playing this very addicting game.

Many speculated that The Arena would go live for $9.99 like other games of its caliber, but it appears to be just $7.99. This may be a temporary stunt to grab steam for the initial release so I'd grab it and save the 2 bucks. As a technical FYI, Aurora Feint II: The Arena 2.0 replaces your existing copy of Aurora Feint: The Beginning upon installation and keeps all it's settings so you can use the character you built up in The Beginning, which was surprising, but awesome.

If you like The Beginning, you'll love The Arena but be forewarned, you *may* go cross-eyed ;)

If you liked Aurora Feint 1, you'll love this!

The game has several new fantastic features. The chat and the "Arena" really make it worth the money.

Right now, there are a few problems with the game. It is a little on the slow side (for some people, it's barely noticeable). Another problem players are having is that they were unable to transfer their Aurora Feint account to the Arena. I'm almost 100% sure the developers will fix this ASAP.

The game is awesome, but the problems need to be solved, if possible.

Great promise, but bugs are unforgivable in an app that costs this much

I really do love this game. It's simple but compelling and the asynchronous duels are brilliant on a lot of levels.

BUT, it's buggier and more crash prone than even the original AF was in its early days. For a paid app to function at a pre-beta level is unforgivable.

And somehow, it's made worse because of the compelling duel gameplay. Nothing like being in the waning seconds of a close match when the whole thing crashes. (And yes, I did restart the phone after installing.)

Recommendation: Wait for update before purchasing. But then, it's a must-buy.
