Ultimate 3D Hack & Slash for iPhone/Touch
Very nice game! The $10 price tag is on the high side for a Touch game, but it approaches PSP/DS level in terms of production quality. They type of effort that has gone into the 3d models and scenery justifies the higher cost. The gameplay is faily linear, but the cutscenes are well done and move the story. The visuals are *excellent* and push the limits of what can be accomplished on the current devices.
I was concerned that that controls might be awkward, but the analog stick works pretty well in that it tracks you even when your thumb drifts from the stick.
The fighting is mostly "hack & slash" style (ie run up, and press buttons quickly), which works, but can get a bit choppy when a lot of enemies are on the screen. The 3d camera zooms in and out as needed- in crowded fights however it can be a bit difficult to see what's going on when everything is scaled to fit the view. There are a few nice touches like the "finishing moves" on certain enemies which actually require a bit of concentration at first to execute.
All in all, a great iPhone game that's a must-buy if you are into this genre...
Wow. The reality of the iPhone as a gaming platform has arrived.
I felt compelled to write this review based on how much I have been playing this game. The graphics as everyone has seen are amazing. The score is perfect, and gives it a real "Gladiator' and "God of War" feel, making it feel epic. There are some honestly jaw dropping moments in this game. The sound effects are the only knock, and like other reviewers have stated, it almost sounds like they were sampled at a really low rate. Too tinny for a game of this quality, but that is a small gripe when you realize how far the bar has been raised. On another note, I agree that the .99c movement have killed the app store. It has put a perception in people's head that $9.99 is too much for an iPhone game. Lets set a different precedent here and pay for quality. Compare 6 hours of fun gameplay for $9.99 vs what kind of ROI you get on a DS or PSP. I had plenty of games on both of those consoles that I played less than 8 ours with that cost upwards of $29 or $39. Give me more Gameloft! Now I truly have a phone, web device, blackberry, ipod and gaming device in my hand.
Can't get past the poor sound effects...
I was expecting this game to break new ground, and in some ways it does. The graphics are very good. The framerate is a little choppy, but not too bad. There are plenty of monsters to kill. The game controls give you more options than Kroll, which is sort of like a "press this button now" type game. My biggest gripe...the music is playing in the background and it sounds great. I swing my mighty sword to slay a hell beast and what do I hear...but a scratchy low-fidelity 8-bit Nintendo like sound that is supposed to be my sword spilling the guts of a demon. I can also hear my enemies grunting as I slay them, which is even worse. Did they record these sounds using a Cricket cellphone? One would think that when a company puts so much effort into designing a game, isn't concerned about making file size compact because it is 80+ megabytes, and has perfect sounding background music, that they would want the most frequently occurring sound in the game to be one that the gamer likes and doesn't cringe at. To put such poor sound effects in the game really takes away from it, kind of like Galcon where you can hear a man's voice making phaser sounds from Star Trek. Come on. Fix the sound. There's no excuse for a game of this magnitute to have such a glaring fault.
