A really nice app
I purchased this app, and I am giving it four stars, mainly on the concept alone... the very first thing I thought about when I heard about in-app purchases with the iphone 3.0 update was an app just like this. This app moves digital comics forward in a big way... if you read digital comics, you have probably dreamed of the the day when an itunes like program exists which would allow you to purchase, save, and organize large amounts of comic books in a legitimate fashion - this app has the potential to turn itself into that. Sadly, without the support of DC and Marvel, no venture into this territory will be “huge” - but I think this specific app does have the ability to become “big” and maybe will give DC and Marvel some motivation to come up with their own apps (does anyone really think those two will agree to be part of the same program? Fans would sure like it, but who knows if it will ever happen).
Good things about this app:
-A clean, easy to use, interface.
-It has the ability to purchase comics inside the app and download them directly to your device.
-Over 30 “free” comics for your $1 purchase... that alone is a pretty good deal. If there is one main selling point for your average iphone owner, this is it.
Not so good things about this app (and a lot of these can be, and will most likely be, fixed with updates):
-Has crashed on me a couple of times when opening comics.
-Navigation around pages is not always smooth and fluid (a bit jerky at times). This can be fixed (and the viewing options, which are rather nice, will most likely improve over time).
-The location request pop-up every time you open up the app - get rid of that unless someone clicks on “find local comic shop” (which is actually a nice little extra feature to the app).
-A more graphically pleasing presentation of the comics you have downloaded would be cool.
-Limited selection for now... I am assuming comiXology is doing everything in their ability to add the most creators, comics, and companies that they can - so I look forward to watching it grow.
-Pricing structure... this might be my biggest concern here - some comics are $.99 and some are $1.99. Why the difference? I can’t honestly tell and would love to know the reasoning - I have always thought that the $.99 per song model that Apple put into place with the itunes store would sever a digital comic book marketplace extremely well. When you start getting into the $1.99 price for a digital comic, the ability to buy those comics cheaper online as part of trade becomes a real possibility. One thing I have noticed - Invincible, Walking Dead, and The Astounding Wolf-Man, I am assuming because they quite popular, are all $1.99... Hey Robert Kirkman and comiXology, why don’t you sell these older comics (only the first few issues of each title are currently available) for $.99 instead of $1.99?? This would free up a $1 per title for customers to try out other lesser known creators and comics, who would otherwise go unread (I have always seen the comic book industry as one where supporting the little guy helps the industry as a whole - an important thing for many comic book fans). For an app which will most likely live and die by its ability to provide new and quality content on a regular basis, a consistent pricing model, which treats all comics equally, will only go to benefit everyone involved (the customers, the creators, and Iconology Inc. as a business) in the long run. If you really want to implement a tiered pricing structure, make a clear distinction on what costs how much and why... for example, any comic released in the past month could go for $1.99, with all other being $.99 - I am sure there are other way to go about this (maybe even sell trades for $4.99), but I feel it is important to be transparent and consistent. Hmm, I think I could go on and on concerning this topic, so without further ado...
The Bottom Line:
All in all, if you are a comic book fan in general, and a digital comic book fan in particular, you owe it to yourself (and possibly the future of digital comics) to drop a buck on this app.
The future is here!
I've been waiting a long time for this app to come along. I downloaded a few comics this evening, many of which were free. I was amazed to find that the pages are shown as individual panels and seem to "animate" from one to the next. I've been reading comics for 25 years, and really dig my iphone. This app is a very cool way for the two worlds to meet. Quite a new and unique way to read comics. Great job guys!
Intuitive -- Great app!
What makes this app so impressive is the interface. Reading a comic is intuitive and natural as you from move from panel to panel. The images crop automatically to carry you along in the story, but you can always manually zoom to see a specific detail or view the page a different way. This makes it easy to admire the artwork, especially the small things you often miss in the background. Another nice surprise is the impact of colors that never appeared this good in print. Terrific app!
