Customer Reviews
Stays true to the [hard]core
Note that this review is catered to those who already are familiar with the DDR franchise. While I was hesitant at first to give this review a 5-star rating, after serious consideration and thoroughly playing the game I can safely say that DDRS does faithfully recreate the true DDR experience on the iPhone.
Here are my biggest issues with the game. First off it is damn expensive. Second, you only get 9 songs when you play for the first time. Next is NO ONLINE component whatsoever, not even a simple leaderboard. Next is not too big of a gripe, but the game only plays at 30 fps. I haven’t played DDR at 30 fps since I stepped on a 5th mix machine 5 years ago.
So on top of getting used to seeing arrows scroll at that framerate again, the harder stepcharts are a pain to read, especially since the viewing area on where to read the arrows is smaller than usual – which brings me to my next gripe. Since your fingers are hovering over the area where you are reading the arrows, your depth of field is more narrow than usual. This just takes some getting used to, no biggie. Another element that takes some getting used to is of course the dance pad. Always in DDR you felt where the dance pad was underneath you in relation to the arrows, but in DDRS you don’t have any recognition under your fingertips.
Some highlights of the game; the music, stepcharts, and difficulties are all intact – DDRS doesn’t suffer from degraded gameplay because it’s on a mobile device. New songs, classic songs – it’s all here after you unlock them. I thought shake mode would be stupid, but it actually works as advertised. The only catch is you can only play the tutorial (1 song) as of this review. The songs sound perfect on headphones. Veteran didders and other rhythm-game junkies alike will enjoy how much polish DDRS has in all its corners. You know you’ll get it just because its real DDR. You know you will if you’ve read this far!
Pretty good but...
I'll keep it simple.
Pro's
-Fun
-Shake mode is pretty funny, don't accidently through your phone.
-A lot of songs and characters to pick from, and all songs have difficulties ranging from beginner to expert.
-Game even has an unlock system to keep you playing for a while.
Con's
-Gameplay lags sometimes, however it could be fix if your turn off character display.
-Using speed mods makes reaction decrease especially if your hands are covering some of the arrows.
-No options to turn off the announcer.
Overall, it's not that bad.
