This is MegaMan 2 in Music & Name ONLY!
I am an avid MegaMan nut. I have played and bested every megaman title that has been released on any platform(except for MegaMan & Bass, SNES/GBA) Yes even the 2 on the WonderSwan! (wiki it if you don't know what a Wonderswan is).
This is NOT MegaMan 2!
What you have here is someones weekend project of retooling the original content of MegaMan 2 to make a quick $5.
Pros: Entire MegaMan 2 soundtrack intact (Music)
Sprites are fully intact to their original dimensions and layout. (no screen cramping or rez changes)
Cons: Just about everything else......
1. As mentioned in other reviews here, the controlls are terrible! the arcade stick gif looks like a typical 4 way stick but it responsds like an analog stick from the Gauntlet Dark Legacy arcade games, overcompensating for a simple retro game.
2. animations are missing / retooled for this terrible port. backgrounds are missing some minor frames of stuff going on that originally added atmosphere in the NES vers. Your jump mechanics have been manipulated like something out of a poor homebrew flash game and is not realistic or faithful to the original at all.
3. Music is somewhat out of sequence with the events going on in the game, example . boss music starts up as soon as you touch the door to enter the boss room, victory music starts up during the explosion of the boss etc. They have also removed a small amount of sound effects that would get lost in the mix since the music is not syced properly. example, bleep in sound effect when starting a stage, occational missing jump bleep when action is heavy etc.
4. Levels have been tampered with and to a small degree laid out defferently than the original. I can only assume this is to make the game a little easier to make up for the terrible controlls.
Conclusion: This feels like a garage 1 weekend homebrew job by about 3 teenagers for play on a Jailbroken Iphone!
It in NO way feels like it was done by a profesional company by any stretch of the term! Shame on you Capcom for passing this off as good work! -_-. All it really does is tarnish what was once a great staple in gaming history!
A Classic Turned into a Train Wreck
As an avid MegaMan fan, I was one of the first out there to discover this app. After spending a good amount of time with the port to IPhone, I must say I am disappointed in the lack of effort Capcom has put in this game. Seriously Capcom, why? For those who are curious, here is a basic rundown:
+Classic Music
+Classic Game
+Nice additions of a Easy, Normal, and Hard Mode
+It's MegaMan on your IPhone
-Poor analog control. Needs to be better. Try to work this one out.
-No Landscape Mode
-Game Mechanics are all off. For instance, those who have played the original NES version of the games many times will discover that the jump physics are way off, and items usually not reachable by MegaMan's jump are now reachable. This ruins the game's perfect balance. Also, when MegaMan falls from a cliff, he floats downward, with no gain in momentum whatsoever.
-No Password Support. The game, for some odd reason, must have a save feature instead. This is semi nice, however, I would like it if passwords were also an option
-Many of the levels have slightly different layouts. As a huge MegaMan fan, I really do not like this
This is sadly not worth paying any money at all until Capcom fixes many of the issues with this game. You have been warned. Save your cash, and wait.
What Hurts the Most is the Potential
Not much to say. The game looks great, but feels tiny in its "window" that isn't even half the screen. I agree with the other reviews that wish for a landscape version so the game will appear bigger.
Initially I was upset as were others that the iconic music was not there, but was relieved to find out that it was there but was defaulted off. (Capcom should fix this - it scares EVERYONE who first plays the game.) Even with music, it doesn't loop right. Minor issue, but still noticeable.
Most of the loss of stars has directly to do with the controls. They are just far too sensitive and the collision areas are far too small. My thumb is big. It rolls. It adjusts. With the iPhone, there is no tactile feedback to tell me that I am perfectly centered. Perhaps Capcom should've gone with something closer to what Nintendo did with Super Mario 64 on DS, where the touch screen auto-centers on where the player touches and creates a dynamic movement grid from that spot. If nothing else, make the collision fields larger. We don't mind moving our finger a bit more in order to give us the accuracy we need.
