BIG FISH GAMES

Casual games have been around for many years. Some say it started with the launch of Solitaire on Windows 95. However, in the past 10 years, with the successes of digitally distributed casual games, there have been three major occurrences that changed the industry. The first wave started with Bejeweled and Zuma. As a result nearly every game launched was a match 3 game for several years. A few years later Betty’s Beer Bar launched, followed by Diner Dash. These time management games started a new craze in casual games.
In November of 2005, Big Fish Games developed and released Mystery Case Files: Huntsville, and the market experienced its most recent shift. The success of the Mystery Case Files series inspired Hidden Expedition, Hidden Mysteries, and many other great hidden-object games. Other games in this series are available for Mac and PC at www.bigfishgames.com.

If I Can Solve this, Anyone Can
(SPOILERS listed to the bottom)
I am not a gamer. Last time I gamed regularly was with my Sega Genesis when young. Having gotten the iPhone, it took me a while to decide to download games. Shooters, RPGs, Myst-types. Meh. Not for me. I like games which make one THINK. Puzzles = good.
I discovered Hidden Object Games in a big way when I happened to pounce on this Buck House one.
I realised I really enjoyed touching the screen indiscriminately, without being timed or penalised for randomly doing so (unlike Interpol, e.g.). In fact, I can't think of a better platform today for HoGs than these i-Devices. It's a marriage of tactile reward and crafty sleuthing.
Having said that, I've read many of the reviews just now AFTER finishing the game (as I saw many contained spoilers when downloading it) I agree with some of the gripes. I'm in the minority as I happen to like the music, but I agree it is a little cheesy and repetitive. Each scene should've had a different soundtrack, like Rule Britannia for the Mews, as an example.
In fact, my worst complaint which I hope Big Fish will consider is that this game naturally attracts slightly older players, not just the 10-20 year olds -- people who know phrase like "lest he decried", already, you know? With that in mind, using archaic words to compose the various letters found (which were largely redundant BTW), was laughable. It seemed as if one of your developers had digested Shakespeare, a pirate manual, and the Court Circular all at once. What I'm arguing for is period accuracy, not just flinging around stilted words hoping it sounds accurate. It doesn't.
Two other quibbles.
- I agree with another poster that the objects need to be varied. Some were in the exact same place, in the exact same room!
- I thought the satchel items used to solve clues were really obvious at times. I read that one person had a problem with the bird cage. That was the easiest one! In fact, the one which stumped me was the very first one, but once I got the hang of "combining" the objects, it was a breeze. Just use common sense.
- One hidden crown is enough. Make it more challenging.
Well, I adore Hidden Object Games, and hope Big Fish produces these by the dozen. I'll buy them all, and I'm off to get Everest now -- but it would be nice to have slightly less expensive ones. $5.99 for only 4 days playing? That's not a good investment, guys. You'll sell tonnes more if it's $3.99.
The caveats are what prevent me from giving 5 stars, because really, this game is excellent.
SPOILERS/HINTS
- Keep tapping the knights to rearrange their sequence
- Sword rips something else other than the curtains/Throne
- The scenes were you need to rearrange stuff, like letters or jewels? I didn't finish them all. I just got the major pieces right.
Awesome hidden object game.
I love hidden object games. I would buy one per week if they were up there. I wish there was a whole category just with these types of games.
Buckingham Palace is as good or better than Everest! The objects are cleaverly hidden yet not too hidden. Sometimes these games hide things that are impossible to find...not this game.
Great job! Keep 'em coming.
Fantastic!
I *loved* the PC game so I was happy to see it available for the iPhone. Beautiful graphics and fun mini-games that use some of the hidden items you find in the levels. I haven't played very far yet, but I'm liking it a lot!
