Beware what is not in this game
OK. I just went back and re-read the description of the game too make sure I didn't miss something about the lack of movement controls. I really had no idea that my movement is pre-determined and I only control the aiming within the game. This should be clearly stated somewhere in the game info.
Everything else the reviewers
say about this game is true. The graphics are very good and the enviroments are creepy. Sound effects are also very good and the story line is really well done.
If this game had clearly stated that you had no control of your movement I wouldn't have bought it for $10. I think they did nail the game as it's designed though. My displeasure is with the lack of disclosure in the game description.
Great Game.
I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did. The great graphics and solid Gameplay really made for one of the best action games on the App Store. And if I was writing this review only on the Gameplay itself, it would get 5 Stars.
However, that it not the case. I am giving this game 2 Stars because of the absolutely DIRTY trick I.D. Played on paying customers. You see, I knew that I was buying an On Rails Shooter when I bought this. Many other gamers, on the other hand, didn't. Why you ask??? It's because I.D. Failed to mention that this game is an "ON THE RAILS SHOOTER" in the Description. And most Gamers who see the name "Doom", and look at the pictures that seemingly show an FPS on the Description page would NOT assume it was anything other than a FPS.
I.D. Acted in a revolting manner when they realized they wouldn't sell as many copies if people knew it wasn't a real FPS, so they manipulated the Description page to fool customers, and achieve more sales. And it makes me sick.
How could a Developer like this, with such a Dedicated and Loyal Fan Base, lie to our faces like that? They just flat out Lied to us for more money. And not only is it the most disgusting tactic that they could have done, it also forever tarnished their reputation in the community.
I am not going to sit here and lie to you and tell you that their are boycotts now because of this, or that they will loose sales in the future because of their love of lying and money. It probably won't happen like that. But I do know for a fact they have lost a few customers, and the ones they didn't loose have vowed to do their research first before making any purchases in the future.
It makes me sad to see another Fan Favorite Developer fall down over their own greed.
The BEST turn-based shooter, period.
id Software is known for being the grandfather of the entire first-person shooter (FPS) genre, and they certainly live up to the title with "DooM: Resurrection" for the iPhone platform! While this isn't a complete port of Doom 3 (from which Resurrection takes its cues from), the experience you do get in Doom: Resurrection is quite unlike any other id game to date.
The main gameplay is more in the style of Time Crisis (turn-based first person shooter), and the player follows a set path in the fully three-dimensional environments as the plot unfolds. The exception here is that id Software, much like they did with Wolf 3d Classic, worked its magic to make the best control scheme to fit the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. As a result, the game flows extremely smooth and the firefights could not be more intense and non-stop for a game in this genre. I'm actually in awe that id Software, not Namco, was the one to make this type of game work to perfection on the iPhone. Namco's Time Crisis app store release looks like an uninspired half-assed port by comparison.
The storyline is quite simple, but very enjoyable. For the first time in a long time, I was actually having fun! "Resurrection" has your usual array of Doom 3 characters, but one character in particular (not spoiling it :D) becomes quite dear to you by the end of the game. The UAC scientists assist you in achieving your goals and will even spoil you with an experimental weapon and other important supplies. Finally, the minions sent forth from hell will surely invade your personal space and make you jump and possibly drop your iPhone/iPod Touch, so play this game with the lights off and some good noise-cancelling earphones :).
I can't wait until an update comes out so that the storyline can continue where it left off. As is, the game is well worth the $10, since it's not your usual "big-name game that lasts all of 10 minutes to beat" type of game that unfortunately plagues the app store. For the fun gameplay, amazing controls, and lifelike graphics (for the iPhone's capabilities), you can't go wrong with this game.
Kudos to id for another great game!
