A superb racer that offers more than the rest.
There are a number of racing games available on the App Store, but 4x4 Jam offers more game play and various modes that make it stand above the rest. There are the usual race modes, but what makes this different is the openness of getting from A to B. The track is wide open and instead of being forced along a designated path, you decide how to get there.
In terms of play modes, the game offers standard racing, Jam and open world. I have to say I am enjoying jam and the open world driving the most over the actual racing game. Jam sets up way-points and the goal is to race to and cross these way-points before the other racers. Get there first and the way-point is moved and you're off again. This is done until a racer get's the most way-points to win a race.
The open world is truly amazing for such a portable device. You can literally drive around forever and not be stopped. It's fun to discover new areas with hills and valley's to jump off and into. The only minor quibble is the fact that the landscape could use some more detail. There are hills, trees and brush to drive through, but maybe some other objects to interact with could be added in the future.
As mentioned, the graphics are outstanding. The vehicles all are well modeled and things are pretty smooth even on my 1st Gen iPod Touch. I imagine on newer devices, everything is perfectly smooth.
The physics in the game is also worth mentioning. Cars collide and interact with each other to cause roll-overs and other mayhem.
Overall a VERY satisfying and fun game to play that offers some variety to the standard racing genre.

Man, this game brings back some memories. I remember playing 1nsane, and always wishing for a mobile version, and blam! Here we go, great physics, good detail, we just need to get some jumps and more maps to make this interesting.

Just when you thought racing titles couldn't get any better than 2XL Supercross and Real Racing, this game comes out of nowhere and raises the bar even further!
This is one of the first racing games I've seen on the iPhone that doesn't limit you to a fixed path on a small, closed course. You can actually drive in any direction and the environment will just keep coming!
Given enough game modes and options, this title could easily become the next "Smuggler's Run" with fantastic multiplayer potential.
Some modes I'd like to see:
Hot Pursuit - A game where one player chases and rams another player's vehicle until one of the vehicles stalls from damage.
Fox and Hound - A player attempts to flee from a team of drivers. The player must either reach a safe zone or disable the pursuing vehicles to win.
Capture the Flag - two teams of players must defend their respective camps from each other while raiding the opposing team's camp at the same time to steal that camp's flag. The team who possesses the most flags after a set length of time wins.
Package Relay - Two teams must compete to capture a package dropped in random locations on the map and return it to one of their camps before it is intercepted by an opposing team. Packages can be passed between teammates by bumping into each other or intercepted by bumping into an opposing team's vehicle.
Last Man Standing - Players must hunt each other's vehicles down one by one and disable them. The last remaining vehicle wins the match.
Vehicle Deathmatch - A no-holds-barred battle between multiple players within a set time limit. Players have unlimited respawn and the winner is decided by the most vehicles disabled.
Other than that, it's already a great title!
