Great Program!
For an unbiased review of the app, read on!
Cliffs:
*Dead simple way to receive a push about @mentions and DM’s.
*Doesn’t burn through your API calls as fast as other methods.
*Limited number of twitter clients, but covers (what I consider) the majority.
*Fast developer feedback.
*Not an instant notification, but plenty fast for real-world use.
Review:
As an individual who is unable to check twitter (yes, even on my phone) all the time throughout the day, it’s nice to be able to receive notification of those important parts. I can already receive a text message when a close friend tweets, but what about someone else who mentions me specifically? Or someone that I’m not following trying to send me a message? That’s exactly where Boxcar excels. This program isn’t designed (currently, who knows what the future may hold) to bring every possible notification that you could ever receive to your phone (who would want that? Your phone would constantly be alerting you) but instead bring you the most important information when you truly need it.
I had a smooth installation, however DID incur the dreaded OAUTH issue that has been plaguing a handful of applications and developers. This isn’t a fault on Boxcar’s end, however to those who are unaware, it may seem that way. Regardless, it was frustrating. After getting that sorted out it was simple a matter of logging into Twitter via OAUTH (Boxcar never sees my username / password) and away I went!
The test I first conducted was mentioning myself in a tweet. Boxcar states that they poll your account every two (2x) minutes to look for @mentions / DM’s. Because that’s a constantly rolling two minutes, you may get alerted 30 seconds after someone @mentions you, or the full 2x minutes. In my tests, it was usually shorter than two minutes…closer to one. Not exactly instant, but fast enough that I couldn’t really tell the different. In a real world environment, I don’t see that being an issue in the least.
I used Boxcar with a handful of apps, but my favorite is still twitterfon (I just love it!). Of the apps that Boxcar supports, not one had a single issue with opening and being called by Boxcar. It was a fast and smooth transition. It would be interesting to see if Boxcar could offer the ability to see that information directly in their app like they do with DM’s, but I understand that there are certain limitations.
My conversations with the developer were smooth and pleasant as well. A couple of times I even received replies back from their iPhone, so it’s nice to know they’re willing to keep in touch while on the go. This may not seem like a relevant bit of information regarding an app, but the first time you have trouble when using an application and can’t get in touch with someone, you’ll learn to value of having dedicated developers like these.
Overall:
This is an app that fulfills a niche market for users of all backgrounds with twitter. Whether you’re a power user or only send off a casual tweet here or there, this app will work for you. I am of a generation that demands instant feedback and gratification (not the best of traits, but at least I’m honest) and Boxcar is able to provide that instant feedback while a number of applications do not, thus, filling in that gap creates a more complete picture (in my opinion). The best part is the price is right. Push notifications are not cheap or easy to implement, and by offering their users a onetime fee rather than a yearly subscription (which I’ve seen with a growing number of apps) we, the users, come out ahead. So that’s Boxcar in a nutshell! Have fun with your tweeting!
