Customer Reviews
Effective OCR in iPhone 3gs. No email required!
I've only tried two samples so far, from a newspaper that was admittedly not even lit very well, and my anecdotal assessment of accuracy is about 95-97%. Does not require uploading and submitting via email - the OCR'd text can be on your clipboard in just a few seconds, ready to paste into the appropriate app. Love it!
Takes some work to use, but is effective. No docs in the App!
Like any OCR tool, even a scanner, it's not magic, and you can futz things up easily. When I first tried this app out I got pissed off enough to start a refund process. But then I reconsidered...
OCRTool works, but you need some prep to get it right: 1/ Take the pic in landscape to catch a higher resolution, 2/ rotate the pic, 3/ use the crop to to align the OUTER frame with the text you want. Once I did this, the accuracy, even with glossy text was 90% or so, which is acceptable to me. It also helps if the page is NOT glossy and is folded down as flat as you can get it. But this is true of any scanned doc.
5 stars because for OCR with my 3GS, it's surprisingly good. However, -1 stars because even a seasoned geek like me had to futz with NO DOCUMENTATION inside the app. If the Dev put a link in the app to jump to documentation or a help file, I think that would be helpful to the users here. Please don't make us dig or have to go back to the AppStore to hunt for docs.
Another thing is the 'inner hatches' of the crop tool. They're okay for alignment but you have to mention that the outer frame of the crop tool is what counts when cropping the text. Maybe for the next version, grid lines and a way to 'pinch rotate & zoom' the text might be a bit more useful.
Basically, if you need an OCR app, you have a 3GS, and you read my review for the gotchas this is a cool app.
Works surprisingly well!
Scanned much better than I thought.
Interesting note: this program will run on an iPod Touch, you can scan saved images, which is neat!
Also note that it converts anything you scan into black on white, so keep that in mind when you scan color objects (scanning white text on grey doesn't work at all...)
