Not quite a complete product
Graphics:
The graphics are arguably the best on any iPhone game. I have tried RE D and the graphics seem to have improved. Everything looks really nice, the enemies, and also the atmosphere. It be nice if they could've added cutscenes instead of these slideshows with text.
Sound:
The sound is pretty good, but only if you play with headphones on. If you play through the speaker it's not too loud. The game has some of the RE4 sounds but it's also missing a lot of the Ganado dialouge, it's reduced to mostly grunts. You can't use your own music, which is a shame, since I think all iPhone games should let you use it.
Gameplay:
The game plays similar to RE Degeneration. It has an on screen stick, and buttons to press to use the guns/knife/special actions. It takes a bit of time to get used to but it controls pretty well. You have a menu to change your weapons, combine treasures/artifacts, options, etc. The game has a merchant between the levels that you can buy weapons, upgrade weapons, herbs, and even ammo from. Which brings me to my next point.
The game is level based. I expected this sort of since it's on the iphone. The levels cover their supposed, key moments in RE4. The game has 12 levels, which covers stuff like the fight against Dr. Salvador, El Gigante, and Verdugo. You also get some Ashley escort missions, and boss levels. The levels are sort of short so it can be pick up and play. But the levels are very similar to sections in the console counterparts. Everything is done really well, the story is told through sort of slide show with text at the bottom. There is only one cutscene in the game, and that is when you meet the merchant (doesn't make much sense).
But yeah, everything is very familiar if you played on the consoles. Shoot legs or face to stun them, melee attacks, everything. However, there's not a lot of tension obviously since it's on the iPhone. There is also no gore in this game since I think iTunes has a strict violence policy. There is some blood though, when you shoot enemies orange sparks come out and when they die for some reason a shower of Green Blood comes out of their chests.
So yeah everything in this game is good what can possibly ruin it? Okay, the game arguably maybe took 3-4 hours for me to beat, I guess that's alright for what it is. But, the biggest problem for me is that it incomplete! The game ends when you beat Verdugo, THAT'S IT! If you played the console version there is at least 1/3 of the game left right after that. The ending just says, "Leon's fear soon turn to determination, Saddler must be stopped!" and that was it! How hard would it have been to add the rest!
Replay Value:
The game has pretty good replay value for what it is. You get a Pro mode after you beat the game, and you can carry over your items in new runs. Also, the game has sort of a "mercenaries" mode. It has 20 challenges that are pretty cool and last about 2-3 minutes and are good for pickup and play gaming.
Bottomline:
Resident Evil 4 Mobile Edition is an achievement in iPhone gaming. But for the price, I believe at the moment it is not worth it. If it is ever maybe 4.99, I recommend it. So I guess it just all depends on you, if what you read you seem to like then do what you want. Just remember, the game is level based, and not all the moments in RE4 are covered (like the island section).
This Isn't the Console Version, But It Is One of the Best Games In the App Store
After a short wait, Resident Evil 4 has been released for the iPhone. If you're expecting the console version of the game, that's not what you're getting. This is a completely different game based off of the console version, ported from a version developed for mobile phones, though the graphics were improved for the iPhone release. This wasn't ported from the console version though, which is disappointing.
That being said, Resident Evil 4 on the iPhone is an inferior game in every way to the console versions. All of the interesting cutscenes are replaced with pictures and text, the levels are much shorter, the graphics are mediocre, and most of the things that made Resident Evil 4 such an incredible game on consoles are missing in the iPhone version.
When compared to other games on the App Store, this is one of the best games. The controls are okay, other games have proved that the virtual analog stick could be a little better. The graphics are pretty decent compared to what's been seen on the App Store so far. The zombie models are overused and some don't look very good. You're still playing as Leon, killing zombies, and trying to survive. The levels are very short, and are nothing like the console version. You can't even go inside most buildings, and the level ends as soon as you kill all of the enemies. The survival aspect of the game feels more like what you would expect in a Resident Evil game than it did in Degeneration. This version of Resident Evil 4 does add some of the things that Degeneration was lacking as well, but Degeneration felt like it had more of a story element, even though the iPhone version of Resident Evil 4 had much more potential.
While the iPhone and the iPhone 3G couldn't run a port of the console version, the iPhone 3GS could. The iPhone 3GS has specs that are comparable, and better in some aspects, to the Gamecube. A port of the console version, even if it was only for the iPhone 3GS, would easily be a game that I would pay significantly more for, and it would also be a much better game, and would be a great game to show off the iPhone 3GS's hardware.
If you want to play Resident Evil 4 on the iPhone, this isn't Resident Evil 4, it's a completely different game that was originally designed for mobile phones. If you want a mobile Resident Evil game, though, this is the best you'll find, and it can be an enjoyable game at times; it's also one of the best games in the App Store.
No RE4, You're Small Time!
In a somewhat predictable move, RE4 (also known as "BEST GAEM EVAR!" by some) has stopped by the iPhone on it's quest to travel all the consoles of the world. When it came I decided to purchase it due to the fact that I enjoyed Degeneration a lot. When I booted it up, my initial expression was that "Wow! Capcom has polished this to a tee, surely I am playing the 'BEST GAEM EVAR!'" And then I played the first level...
Apparently, this was a port from the Japan only BREW version like Degeneration, so length is somewhat understandable. But while Degeneration had actual full fledged enviromenst and felt like a cohesive experience. RE4 is the Abridged version of the console version. You can open doors, but there are less than five in the game. There are a plethora (and I mean a plethora) of upgrades for your guns, but if you are halfway decent at gaming, you will beat the game on normal before you upgrade the Handgun all the way, much less any other item. Most areas consist of a single room with enemies and you are told to go crazy, and nothing else. That is hardly a bad thing in and of itself, but since Degeneration had that and a lot more, you can't help but feel a tad ripped off, even for a mobile game.
In terms of in-game production values, however, the game is MUCH more plesant to look at then Degeneration, with most of the enviroments blowing it and most other iPhone games out of the grave. Leon and Ashley show off the most love in this respect with their relatively high polygon counts and texturing jobs. (Though it seems that looking at Leon's face that we are looking at an RE5 Chris in disguise, with less performance enhancers. ^_^)
The other enemies are also slighly improved over their Degeneration counterparts, but not by much. Lighting is usually static, but does a very good job at conveying mood. All in all what I would expect from Capcom.
Audio though seems to have gotten the short end at times. The main music tracks are well done, but loop poorly. The sounds are only passable at best, with guns rarely giving an "OOMPH!" that they should, the villagers, cultists, just about everyone giving a poor snake-like hiss about every second that they are not dead. At least the zombies in Degeneration had the decency to moan in various ways once in a while, you think Capcom could have included some Spanish or chanting in between. However, one moment stands out as perfect in execution, with Leon walking into a prison and all the sound cutting off suddenly. It makes me wish they put in more effort.
The one real reason however that this game barely gets a four (I really should give it a three, but this is still a good game.) are the cutscenes. Sure, most Resident Evil plots read out like a story I made about "Haircomb Man" back in fourth grade, but Degeneration actually had a semblance of trying. Capcom just figured that no-one even cared at this point and replaced everything with a slideshow cutscene as they saw fit. While this didn't quite bother me during "plot" moments, apparently they couldn't even be bothered to show Leon climbing a ladder, instead taking a GC screenshot of Leon climbing a ladder with the words "Leon climbs a ladder.". CAPCOM WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN YOUR MOBILE DIVISION! Then they turn right back around and have Ganados climb that same ladder just fine. And apparently, it is much easier to animate Ashley jumping into Leon's arms then to show him CLIMBING A STUPID LADDER, even when he has done it before in Degeneration and hell, FOUR LEVELS AGO! Did he just become paranoid about ladders or something? That what I would normally call lazy development, but call schitzophrenic instead because they can't make up their minds on what they want to do. The game is chock-filled with these moments of halfway done things, Like Capcom was so pumped to do a true to the game mobile version and then after a while got bored and figured people would buy it anyway (Which is true, since I bought it.) even to the point where you essentially get only half a game, or to be precise an advertisement for the main game. I see no need to defend Capcom here. Other smaller companies can create somewhat full experiences on the iPhone, why can't a Triple A studio. I just want a full experience that would feel authentic. They did it with Degeneration, why not with their "BEST GAEM EVAR!".
I recommend buying it if you have the cash, but don't expect the full experience.
