Customer Reviews
Great game, disappointing controls.
I LOVE the Monkey Island series, the game itself is a classic that MUST be played.
That said, this game has some really silly controls. One would think, with a point and click game, you would just tap where you wanted and that is where you'd 'click'. In this game, however, you're given what amounts to an onscreen mouse cursor that you move around the screen, SLOWLY, lifting your finger multiple times just to get the cursor to where it was you wanted to 'click'. What is wrong with just tapping where you intended to go/look/talk/etc?
Seriously Lucasarts, update the game and at least give the OPTION for this obvious type of control scheme. As it goes, in this version the controls slow down the gameplay and hinder what would have most likely been the perfect version of this game. It's playable, but still a disappointment in its current form.
Straight port.
The interface is the bad part, why do I have to "mouse" drag my finger around to move the "cursor"? It should just be a point/touch... it's an iphone for crying out loud. Other than that, I mean Monkey Island is brilliant, but I feel that this could have been an improvement over the original game, but they failed.
The mouse movements are relative the screen, so if you click to move somewhere, the mouse then leaves focus. Not a big deal if you have a mouse, but a big deal if you have to force the cursor back over the item you were just focused on.
Idea great, controls horrible
Great classic game- downloaded it the second it was announced. Now I'm a bit disappointed. Yes, it's Monkey Island, but it's also a very, very lazy port. The controls are not optimized for the iPhone at all, except in cases where they added functions not in the original-like pinching to zoom in. Otherwise, you have to drag the target cursor around and tap to move to IT, really annoying. The iPhone is actually quite a perfect medium for adventure games I'm realizing, so being this close- and with the best from my childhood- is that much more frustrating.
Additionally, I've experienced issues where the app doesn't even load it's "Verb Menu," which is required to interact with anything. Restarting the app usually fixes this. This is on a 3GS.
Long story short: if seeing Melée Island appear with "that tune" on your phone is worth $8 BY ITSELF, go nuts and download it. If you want to play it, I'd get ScummVM and a mouse and fire it up on a computer. This is just too frustrating.
