Customer Reviews
Lovely piece of digital convergence, [+]nice reliability [-]needs latest maps
I find the TomTom app for iPhone fantastic, and this is speaking as an owner of a dedicated navigation unit. The interface has the usual TomTom ease of use, configurability of map color schemes and voices, and good reliability. The spoken instructions are timed just right. Also a big positive for me; traffic camera warnings. Driving through the UK where traffic cameras are everywhere, and the fines are big, the traffic camera warnings saved me the purchase price many times over.
For reference, I used the phone without the TomTom car kit, but with the phone mounted on the dash (using cable ties!). I found the GPS reception too poor if the phone was down inside the car; this poor reception is the cause of the problems others have reported with the map jumping around. Also, one strange quirk (of the iPhone audio system actually, not the app) is that you have to adjust the app volume using the volume control in-app, not using the volume buttons on the side of the phone. If you use the buttons on the phone, you only change the ringer volume. This took me by suprise at first, but once you use the in-app volume slider, you'll get plenty loud enough spoken instructions even without an external speaker.
The biggest negative for me is that the map database is not the very latest release. One of my destinations in a 1-year old subdivision did not appear on the TomTom Western Europe map, although it is in Google Maps. That's the reason I took off one star. I have a few other small negatives: The 3D map view does not show a compass point, and after many hours of driving you can end up with no idea whether you're going west or east (you can choose to have the 2D map always show north at the top however). Another negative is that to search for a point of interest while you're navigating (e.g. to find the next gas station on your route) you have to exit to the "browse map" screen and use the search button from there. This is clumsy; search should be accessible right from the main menu while navigating. My final gripe is that in the "browse map" display, scrolling gestures are frequently mistaken for zooming. This can be really annoying and makes using the browse map feature much less nice than browsing the Google Maps app on the phone, for example.
Overall, I really like the app, I have high hopes for some great feature additions in future realeases, and I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Best Turn-By-Turn Navigation for iPhone with lots of room for improvement
I was super excited for this app to come out and I have to say that even though it does what it advertises to do just fine, which is giving accurate turn-by-turn-directions, it falls short when it comes to integrating popular TomTom Plus subscription services like traffic and mobile traffic cameras. In-App purchasing of custom voices like Homer Simpson's for example would've been kind of cool. Also because of the lack of integrating google, I actually found myself switching to the iphones standard google maps application just to find out the address of a place I want to navigate to. I then had to remember it and switch back to TomTom which is also quite a bit slow to load and at least on the iPhone 3G doesn't operate too smoothly.
I wonder how many more options will show up though once TomTom releases the actual car mount. So while this app is the first great turn-by-turn navigation for the iPhone, it still leaves lots of room for improvement which TomTom's software engineers should see as both a challenge and a chance.
Terrible
The maps are conprehensive and up to date but my praise ends there.
I tried the TT in pedestrian mode using on the voice directions. First of all, it was off by 1-2 blocks. It kept telling me to turn right or left and then turn around. I played its game for a few minutes hoping that it would get more accurate but it never did. Even on the major roads it wanted me to turn around. Eventually, I resorted to the trusted paper maps and plotted my route.
Second, it never said turn right in x number of meters. That would have been helpful since I was not sure which street for turn on to.
Third, it does not re-route. I kept the TT going to see what it would say and it always wanted me to turn around. I don't thinkt think it auto re-routes or else it would have figured out the my direction.
The UI to to set the route is pretty good. However, there are times when you need to see more or less of the map. This is often because of its poor accuracy. If you want to pinch-and-zoom or move around the map you have to exit navigation and which to browse map. Why can't you do that in the same navigation map?
If it requires the currently unavailable car kit to work accurately then they should not offer a pedestrian or cycle mode.
I would like my money back and I will be trying the Navigon instead.
