Zzzzzzz...
The game works fine for me, but I just didn't find it any fun. The two game mechanics, Mask and Dark Passenger, which you have to keep in check or lose the game, seem a bit abstract and cumbersome, and I found myself simply trying my best to recall the conversations of Season 1 anytime I needed to talk to someone in game, as that virtually always garantuees the best outcome. When it's time to actually take someone out, the game basically does everything for you. After a few cinematics showing the abduction, room prep, etc., you are required to draw little patterns on a black screen, hear the guy scream, then watch another cinematic of trash bags being tossed into the ocean. Oh, but you do get to fix a tear in the plastic sheeting! Collecting evidence in between is quite laborious. You basically walk around and click on glowing things. Later, you can practice your skills or use other techniques to find evidence, such as blood splatter analysis, but the feeling that the whole game is simply a shell for a bunch of Dexter-themed mini-games makes it quite monotonous. In short, if you haven't seen Season 1, you may find the story interesting--but then again, if you want the story, stick with the TV show.
Not too shabby
The game follows the story of season one fairly closely so even if you haven't seen the show, you can follow the story. There are a nice variety of gameplay types from looking for clues, picking locks, interrogating victims before killing them. The way that is handled was a good choice too; you don't actually see the person you're cutting. Simple arrows and dots are put on screen and if you trace them in time a little blood streak and small scream will happen. While that isn't as bad as it could have been, this definately isn't a game for kids. Apart from the violence Deb's "coloful vocabulary" is also present. It let's you know when you download but if you have a tinged kid with an iPod Touch or iPhone make sure to get the OS 3.0+ update so you can use those parental controls.
Speaking of controls, everything works pretty well and you can switch them at will as some control types work better during certain parts than others. I did find the blood splatter and paint chip minigames in the crime lab to be unreasonably hard, either due to vauge instructions or it being way too sensitive. After 15 minuets trying blood splatter I matched a partial once and wasn't able to duplicate it on retries and couldn't figure out where the "lock" area was in paint chip.
The graphics are pretty good and near the best on the iPhone. I have noticed some glitches (such as Donovan walking into the stairs to the gazebo as you stalk him then appearing on the top part) but nothing too bad.
While I haven't FULLY completed the game yet, I expect that it will take awhile as a lot happened in season 1. Hopefully if there are more added for further seasons they'll either be free add-ons through updates or cheaper in-app purchases if you buy through this app (as well as making the full "Season 2+" app buyable alone) as the current price is pretty pricey for a game app. It's worth it but I don't know how I'd feel about having to pay that much and have a bunch of apps for each season. It's totally worth it for fans though but if you're not a fan or on the fence maybe wait for a sale.
It'll be interesting to see what Marc Echo and Icarus do with this series...
PSP quality, first & only.
Update: they have made 4 episodes of this game. This is only the 1st. The other 3 are already done and could be released at any time.
I've also heard this game only works on 3.0 and that is why people are complaining about the game not working. No 2.2.1 compatibility.
I've never watched this show before, and I really dislike stealth games. There is a stealth element here, but Dextwe really seems at its core to be more like a series of seamlessly integrated mini-games more then anything.
However, I can appriciate the artistic value Dexter has achieved for an idevice game.
No appstore game has ever cone close to achieving list level of console-quality polish. The 3-D graphics-engine is incredible. I believe it surpasses Modern Combat. And Modern Combat surpasses everything else.
But with the musical score, cut-scenes throughout, and professional voice-over work, this is the first game to come reasonably close to emulating what the PSP can deliver, in terms of offering a total package.
No Gameloft game can compete with the level of polish here. However, it's a slower-paced game then some might want to play.
The story is exceptionally strong as well. Obviously, since it's mimmicking the show. I'm just saying, if iPhone games fall consistently short in one category, it's in the storylines. The Story is somewhere between weak and non-existent in most iPhone games, but certainly not with this one.
Ecko claims the game is 8-10 hrs long. For the price, and considering the high level of content, it's a helluva deal.
Buy the way, there's serious adult content here; although it is presented in a mature, if not artistic way. Still, I never thought Apple would approve
of such things.
