Description
Gaia GPS turns your iPhone or iPad into a fully-functional outdoor GPS. Use Gaia GPS for hiking, biking, running, sailing, driving, and other outdoor sports.
Gaia lets you:
• Download maps for times when you don't have an internet connection.
• View topographic and road maps. Use MyTopo maps in the US/Canada, and Cloudmade topo and road maps all over the world.
• Record tracks, waypoints, and take geo-tagged photos.
• Search for nearby waypoints and reports about places.
• Import and export GPX files, by email or to EveryTrail.com.
• Customize all aspects of Gaia, including units, coordinates types, color and sound, and more.
Gaia GPS is developed by a trio of outdoorsy 20-somethings, living in the mountain town of Truckee, CA. Please email us with questions, bug reports, feature ideas, and other feedback at gaia@gaiagps.com.
If you are a GPS enthusiast, we’d also be happy to add you to our beta test group. Beta testers preview and test new releases before they hit the App Store, and help guide the development of Gaia GPS.

►►IMPORTANT - INTERNATIONAL USERS
The CloudMade topo tiles included with this app cannot be mass-downloaded. You must buy a $4.99/year subscription within the app for this capability, because we must pay a licensing fee for each user.
As part of the base app, you can mass-download CloudMade shaded relief and road maps, and OSM road maps internationally, as well as MyTopo maps in the US/Canada.
What's New In Version 3.3
* added true/magnetic compass toggle to Settings
Fixed bugs on iOS 4.0:
* track imports will now work
* everytrail exports with photos now work
* Gaia Waypoints will now work
Customer Reviews
Great app, great developers
Another update:
I took this app with my iPad 3G on a big trip out west to boulder, CO, yellowstone, Grand Tetons, 7 devils. I left my $300 hand held gps at home. The app and the iPad 3G preformed amazingly. Before the hikes I was able to load gpx files into the app from lots of web sites, and downloaded the topo titles for the places I was going to hike and sight see. With no cell signal (turned off wifi & cell to save power)the iPad grabs gps signal fast and Gaia loaded up the topo maps and gpx trails that i downloaded earlier flawlessly. I also used Gaia to record the trails I went on, which also worked great and was able to show every one where we where on the trail, where we needed to go and all the stats that we accomplished. The iPad battery easily out lasts my handheld gps (around 10-15 hours with wifi & cell off while recording tracks)and the screen makes it easy for every one to see (thought it's tough to see in direct sun lite, you can usually find a good angel)
I also used Gaia to spot sights to see in yellowstone. It was great to be able to tell every one what mt range, rivers, lakes, gorges they where looking at. You can also see allot of hiking trails, and pull over spots for sight seeing.
Having Gaia & the iPad 3G with me was a life changing experience and I do not think I will ever go on a hike with out it.
(please remember to always bring a paper map for a back up)
Update: this app keeps on getting better. New interface is great, compass on map screen + you can add stats to also be shown on map. Trip recorder also improved with altitude graphs and lots of stats for current trip and over all you trips. New cloudmate maps give you more maps to choose from. Over all an A+ update. If you are having issues (I am not) email the developer. They listen and are willing to take your comments and do something about them.
This is an awesome hiking app with free topo maps that can be downloaded and saved to be used with no cell signal. Great features like recording and saving & sharing tacks. Loading GPX files, follow tracks, list & search POI's. The developers really listen to ideas & issues and are constantly updating the app
Great App - great support
I've been using this app for about 4 months as part of a local search & rescue team. I've found it to be accurate and informative. Having access to downloadable maps for FREE is a huge BONUS!
I've read some of the posts about it being hard to use or not functional - most of those posts can be resolved by reading the documentation on GAIA's website
Customer support is also really good - I've used many apps that have ZERO customer support - these guys have responded to my emails in a timely and informative manner.
The V4 update came out within a few days. If you are running V4, make sure you update your app too!
Must Have APP!
This app is extremely well done and useful for any outdoor enthusiast! Just got back from using this App in Southern Utah (Bryce, Zion, Lake Powell) and I couldn't have imagined the trip without this! Forget about needing any maps and don't waste your money on expensive backcountry GPS systems! For an amazingly low price you have access to great topographical maps and a very accurate gps locator. Downloading maps is easy and fast. While hiking or boating I was able to zoom in and out of an area with a pinch of your fingers to easily monitor the overall progress- fantastic!!! Best App for an outdoor enthusiast!
