Description
Gaia GPS turns your iPhone into a fully-functional GPS handheld. Use Gaia GPS for hiking, biking, snowboarding, skiing, driving, running, sailing, and other outdoor activities.
• Download maps for times when you don't have an internet connection.
• View topographic and road maps. Use MyTopo maps in the US/Canada, and Cloudmade topo and road maps all over the world.
• Record tracks, waypoints, and take geo-tagged photos.
• Display speed, distance, and other navigation statistics. (MGRS, UTM, decimal, degrees/minutes/seconds, and decimal minutes coordinate types)
• Search for nearby waypoints and reports about places.
• Import and export GPX files, by email or to EveryTrail.com.

This application will not be fully functional on these devices. The GPS Recorder and compass will be inactive. You will be able to view maps and waypoints, but you cannot record tracks, photos, or waypoints
What's New in Version 2.4
When upgrading to v2.4, the app may crash at start-up and delete all of your Gaia GPS data. If this happens, please delete the app from your iPhone and reinstall.
The reason for this problem is we added a Notes field to the database in the app. When you change the database of an iPhone app, it can be tricky to get users' phones to migrate data properly. It appears that migration for users with large maps saved is failing because the data doesn't migrate fast enough.
We apologize if you experience this problem. Anyone who has not yet upgraded may wish to back up any important data saved in the app before updating.

* we also made bookmarks no longer save the map type at all. This has caused confusion among users and we think it was just a bad choice in the first place. A bookmark will always load with the current map type now.

Easy map downloading/ pre-loading
The iPhone 3gs's gps works without cellular service, however maps for your current location won't download if you don't have internet access (you may have seen this on google maps). This is why many turn-by-turn gps driving apps have built-in maps.
This app allows you to download maps (very easily & intuitively inside the app for FREE) for a region before you go there. So even if you lose your cellular signal, you will still have gps and map data.
Additionally, I'm very impressed with the topography maps.

Nice App!
I am new to the iPhone and apps and being an elder somewhat tech-challenged. However, I have found this application to be a wonderful tool for mapping my location or locations of places I would like to visit. Keep bringin it on!!!
