No good for Mixing/Preparing Inks, (maybe good for Digital Printer and Web Designers)

If you need to actually mix/prepare inks (and not just type into the computer the Pantone color that you want) this app is not for you.

If you are a offset press operator, color supervisor or are in charge of calculating, preparing or mixing inks save your $10, (at least for now).

Given the fact that this is a formulation guide I find it disturbing that Pantone left out CMYK values for the colors and most importantly the formulas to mix the base inks to produce the desired Pantone color. This app might be useful for digital printers with glorified copiers in which you just TYPE a Pantone color and the Rip makes the calculations to produce the color. That is also assuming, that you have a spectometer to calibrate the digital press, if not, then you are screwed since you don't even have the CMYK values as a reference to start tweaking the value to get closer to color.

Interface is good, but that is jusy eye candy, as it is, other options currently exists in the App Store that are better and at least have the CMYK values.

Handy for what it does

Obviously this isn't for print work. However, it is a handy way to reference colors on the go without carrying a Pantone book with me everywhere. I often see things when I'm out and about and want to remember the way a few colors looked together. This app serves as a handy color note-taker. Even if it's not good for print work, I can still select and match colors as they appear on the phone and use that later for inspiration. A couple of niggles:

The slider is positioned above the color fan which means that as you drag your finger across the impossibly tiny color slider, your hand is blocking your view of the larger color fan. From a usability standpoint the slider should be repositioned at the very bottom of the screen, the fan should be at the top, and the wells for dragging colors from the fan should be in the middle.

I think $10 is a little high. I paid it out of curiosity, but if future updates are always this rich, I'll avoid them. Some are requesting the CMYK values be included, which would add value, but the app does include the RGB values, which is sensible as those would represent what you're seeing on screen.

It also includes the GOE guides which is a big help to me. There's no way our office is going to convert to a completely different numbering system and invest in thoses books (much less get our overseas manufacturers to do the same AND keep it all straight), but we occasionally receive colors specified with the new GOE numbers. This app is a small help in that I can at least see what range the color falls in. So in the end, I feel $10 is only a LITTLE on the high side.

I wish I could save color palettes to the phone without logging into the myPantone service. That requirement borders on the petty. If the app were quite a bit cheaper, then I could see forcing me to use the service. At $10, it's a little insulting to then ALSO require I hand over an e-mail to save my work.

Great App, Only Lacks Digital to Pantone Conversion

Very useful app. In order to be perfect, it should add the ability to convert RGB and CMYK colors to the nearest Pantone color. There is a need today of an app to draw a bridge between colors in web design and in print. This app could be the one. This feature would also help Pantone company to strengthen its dominance in the print industry as the reference of color. What hapens today is that much artwork and logos are developed in computers using CMYK and then many times people at print shops just try to match the colors without using Pantone at all. If the artist is able to send specifications as Pantone numbers, with the help of this app, this would make everyone's job easier. I know one can do it within Adobe's program, but it is a pain in the neck.
I hope this feature comes in the next upgrade !
