Astounding

Even now, over a decade after it's original release, Beneath a Steel Sky is still a pleasure to play.
The plot is one of the best I've ever seen, with hilarious dialogue and a serious story underlying it.
The voice acting is great, and there's a HUGE amount of that. This is just a rough estimate, but I'm guessing that around a third of the 100+ megabyte file size of this game is due to the voice acting. For anything/anyone you can talk to or interact with, there's always at least a sentence of voice acting to go along with it. In the case of people, (or your talking robot friend, Joey), that one sentence can usually be extended to at least three, but usually five or more. And there are no repeats, either; each and every character in the game has something completely new to say.
The controls in Beneath a Steel Sky are simple, but easy to use. You slide your finger over something in order to see if it's interactable or not. After you select it, you then you have a choice of either looking at it, trying to operate it on it's own, or using something from your inventory on it. Oh and speaking of interactivity, there are usually at least three or more, (usually more), things to interact with in any given room.
As can be expected of a 10+ year old game, the graphics aren't exactly revolutionary. However, the animations are solid, the intro. cutscene is amazing, and the art style is quite good. So, it all balances out in the end.
The sounds in this game are some of the best I've seen in any game so far, ten years old or not. The music is great and always fits the tone of the game, while the sound affects and voice acting sound crisp and high-quality.
With a top-notch story, amazing voice acting, good controls, decent graphics/animations, great sounds, and a huge amount of content in general, it's no wonder that Beneath a Steel Sky is considered one of the best adventure games ever made. Buy it!

Interesting and Competent but Ultimatly Lacking

Nothing wrong with the iPhone implementation and the game is moderatly funny but the puzzles are fairly weak and have some irritatingly illogical solutions. Like randomly giving away things you need and would NEVER give away, useless objects, using objects on things that make no sense, being forced to talk to people multiple times before a puzzle is solved, suicide learning, etc.

After awhile it turns into just randomly trying everything on everything and talking to everyone about everything then trying every object in your inventory on those people. In other words it gets boring really quickly because there is no intellectual challange it's just drone clicking.

If you liked the original then you'll love this iPhone version but otherwise it's just, "Meh."

Pure Class!

I was a huge fan of the point-and-click adventure back in the day. Three brands stood out - Sierra, LucasArts, and Revolution. Playing this game on the iPhone feels just as good as it did back then, it takes me right back to a time when story and character development were so important. In many ways, modern day high-end RPGs like Mass Effect were born out of games like this, and Beneath a Steel Sky is a great introduction to story-based gaming for this generation. It looks great on the iPhone, the voice-acting is fun, the writing is classy, and it feels timely with the current surge in interest in graphic novel-inspired entertainment (Dave Gibbons was artist on Watchmen). Not just great fun as an educational journey back to one of the highlights of the era of the Graphic Adventure, but also top value entertainment by today's standards.
