Without a doubt, Sniper vs. Sniper is the premier sniper game available for the iDevice. Com2uS builds upon the multiplayer success of Homerun Battle 3D by bringing the same seamless experience to the deadliest of sports in a highly addictive and enjoyable way.
Sniper vs. Sniper offers both a single player (read: offline) mode and a multiplayer online experience. Single Player is broken into 3 modes: Campaign, 1 vs. 1, and Special Mission. Campaign tasks you with taking out a certain number of snipers within the allotted time. 1 vs. 1 mirrors the online experience against a computer-controlled opponent, giving you a taste of what’s to come when you man up and take on other players. Special Mission involves a bunch of mini-missions that give you a chance to upgrade your equipment.
There are 6 battlegrounds available in the game: Training Field, Building, Village, Forest, Temple, and City, each more difficult than the previous. Finding the enemy requires you to sweep the area with your binoculars until you find him. Quickly switch to your sniper scope with a tap of the screen. Use the accelerometer to train your crosshairs on the sitting duck and fire away. Head shots are worth more and will surely kill the would-be assailant. Body shots will do damage, but it may require several shots to take him down. Firing on your enemy gives away your position, so be quick and accurate to ensure your own safety. It gets really tense when you spot your enemy, only to see him drop his binoculars and take aim with his rifle.
The online gameplay is what sets this game apart from all of the other sniper games on the iDevice. The mechanics of all of these games are fairly similar, but it’s the ability to take on people from all over the world that makes this game a must-play. You earn points from winning matches. The greater your point count, the higher your overall ranking. You can request matches against others or wait to be invited. Friend lists allow you to keep your buddies or favorite competitors a tap away. Multiplayer can be carried out in either Alliance Attack or 1 vs. 1. Alliance Attack allows you and a friend to take on 2 opponents at the same time. Of course, the purest mode is 1 vs. 1, mano y mano. Just you and your wits against him and his. Crazy fun and worth the admission price alone.
The graphics are pretty decent. They’re not quite as good as Homerun Battle 3D, but they work for the game and they are just as good as any of its direct competition. The sounds are also adequate, with nice gunshot blood splatter effects. Of course, both of these pale in comparison to the necessity to have spot on controls, which makes or breaks a sniper game. The Sniper vs. Sniper controls work well once you get used to them. I struggled a bit at first until I got the hang of how to tilt the iDevice to move fluidly. Once you get this down, half the battle is won. There are some pretty outstanding players out there, so you’ll want to up your skills in offline and earn some upgrades through Special Missions before jumping right in and getting owned, which will decimate your point total and ranking.
Overall, the game is very polished and offers great replay value. There are a few customization options, such as invert controls, manual tilt calibration, blood on/off, and more. There are chat options when playing online, so you can taunt your opponent. It far exceeds the other sniper games and then some. Sniper vs. Sniper is a blast to play and is a great value from an outstanding company committed to creating, and maintaining, quality games.
