Almost perfect, but...

The Settlers of Catan is one of my favorite board games of all time, so I'm glad this has finally hit the iPhone. I downloaded it as soon as it was released, and have played through several games. This is about a perfect a rendition of the basic game as I could have expected on the iDevice, except for one big thing, which is the lack of online muliplayer. There is a hotseat mode, but if I had a few friends together who actually wanted to play, I'd rather just break out the actual board game! So if online play comes out as part of an update, I'll update this review to 5 stars.

The interface is well done, and it doesn't take that long to figure out everything. The only gripe here is if you want to play a development card, you have to scroll through all of the available options, even if you don't have any in your hand. It's not a huge deal, as there are only 4 or 5 types you can play in a hand, but I wanted to mention it. Also, it would be nice if there was a way to buy multiple items at once, like roads. Right now, you have to buy a road piece, place it, then go and buy another one, place it, then go buy another one... etc. If I have enough resources it would be cool to be able to tell the game I want to buy 3 roads all at once, and then put them down.

Graphics are well done, with small animations on some of the tiles, so things like wheat look like they are swaying in the wind. Animation is also well done, though I did turn on fast animation as it makes the game go buy a lot quicker. There are a few things that still slow the game down, like when the game is handing out resources after each dice roll. It goes through each player one by one with an animation showing what resources they get, which is good because you see who is getting what, but I think it could move a bit faster. I also think a simple graphics option would be nice. When the map is zoomed out all the way, the graphics are a bit busy, so it's sometimes hard to make out where everything on the map is, at least compared to Kolonists. Otherwise, the graphics are really well done.

I don't know how good the AI is. I've played half a dozen games, and have won 3, a couple by a large margin. I'm no Catan expert or anything, but they seem to make some strange choices at times, like being willing to trade with players who are about to win.

I do think this is well worth the $4.99, and hope USM will add online play in a future update. Also, this is the basic Catan game. No extras like the Seafarers, Cities & Knights, or the 6 player expansion packs. Maybe we'll see these in an update too, but I'd want to see multiplayer first.

Nailed it! But I have some suggestions.

LOVE IT, GUYS! But here are some suggestions:

1.) Yellow markers should be tinted orange or brown to ease eye strain against a board with lots of yellow.

2.) Speed up the die roll just a bit.

3.) During the trade, it would be nice to do an open trade with the AI. "I have ore. Anyone want to trade something for it?"

4.) Nice artwork, but I don't think the graphics show off the power of the iPhone. Smooth out the animations, too.

5.) Wifi or Internet play would be awesome!

6.) Being able to post a win to my Facebook friends would be fun (and free advertising for you).

7.) Expansions.

Other than that, thanks for a fun way to pass time!

I really wanted to like this game...

I've been playing the board game for ages and I am so excited that Catan is fianlly released for the Ipod/phone! The only thing I can't get over, is how bad the dice roll odds are. I've even changed the options as stacked, stack-5, no luck! I was so frustrated I nearly threw my Ipod to the floor! It makes for uneven and A.I. cheat'n game fun! If this can be fixed I would extremely enjoy it, but trust me, it really is unbalanced, constantly. Otherwise, don't pass this app. up, it's still one of the best!!!

UPDATE: I now refuse to play this game on my ipod until an update arrives. I don't understand how there is only a select few reviews here that address the weighted dice rolls. I went to the help page and the only thing they said was that the A.I. was "smart" in different ways. No my friends, "smart" does not include cheating with dice rolls. I checked my game stats and my numbers NEVER end up getting rolled, unless I begin building on the same numbers as the A.I. and even then, the dice mostly roll obscure numbers that are not mine. The rule of 6 and 9 being rolled more than other numbers is a joke in this perversion of the game in reality. Please fix this, I don't want to throw my Ipod at the wall in frustration. This review used to be four stars, until an update where this and other issues are addressed it will remain at one star.
