Customer Reviews
Great App
I like this app since they reduced the price. Now you only have to pay for whichever region you need. App takes a little while to acquire the GPS signal and sometimes loses signal for no apparent reason. I like the reality view pro and lane assistant along with nice TTS voice, iPod controls and Local Google search. Overall a very nice app compared to tomtom.
Very Pleased
I've been using this for a few days now and comparing it to CoPilot (free for 30 days) and my Garmin.
Pros:
1. Good price point. You only pay for a single region.
2. Live traffic alerts work well and you only pay a one-time charge of $20.
3. Uncluttered view.
4. Absolutely terrific lane-assist views. Can be customized.
5. Customizable ipod controls.
6. One tap takes you to 2D-3D switch control (Garmin takes 6 taps).
7. Learns/saves your common routes.
8. Customizable POI brand-icon alerts.
9. One tap switch between ETA/time to destination info.
10. Acquires GPS signal fairly quickly.
11. Pinch-expand touch for zooming is easy and fun.
12. Auto zoom according to speed is great.
13. The only 3D view I've ever felt confortable watching.
14. Tap the live map once to get 2D scrolling - very useful.
15. Tap the live map once to save current position and give it custom name.
Cons:
1. Street names on-off button too easy to tap and turn off (next to 2D-3D).
2. Inconsistent POI views between 2D-3D.
3. McDonalds and Starbucks are the two most accurate POIs. Why not all?
4. Lacks some bells/whistles of other navigators.
5. Sometimes takes odd routes to destinations that are a bit longer (had it set for 'optimum' - will try 'fastest' in the future)
6. Terrain view doesn't seem to work for me as shown.
7. No instructions available in the app or on the web site. Had to tap a lot to figure out some functions. Still don't know if I've 'seen' everything available.
I'm sticking with Navigon for now, especially because of the one-time traffic alert charge. Others charge monthly or annual fees for this important service. I have a Garmin 265T ($235) and although it has a bigger screen and some nice features, I won't be buying another. Navigon bests it in most ways. I recently drove through L.A. with the Garmin and Navigon both running. The Garmin alerted me to slow traffic 30 miles ahead but didn't change my route. Navigon CORRECTLY advised me to change my route to avoid the slowdown. I took a different freeway and arrived at my destination on time.
The Garmin can be scary-accurate when it comes to estimating ETA. The Navigon falters in that area but it also 'learns' from your driving so that should improve with time.
I was turned off almost immediately by CoPilot's cluttered view and huge arrow and streets. The POIs are its best feature, I think.
Some reviewers here are pretty abrupt at faulting Navigon when 'user-error' seems to be the problem. No navigator is 'perfect' (5 stars) for everyone but this one comes closest for me.
Apples to apples, this is a sour grape
3 major issues! I have nearly all the navigation apps to find the best, so my review is educated and experienced with use and features
Issue #1:
I got this (and the additional $20 Text-to-speech add-in) for one reason... Routing multiple destinations. I'm sad to say, it navigates me in the order of entering them, not the best possible route. Obviously, if I knew where each business was located, I wouldn't need the app... I expected there to at least be an option to order the destinations in the mist efficient route, but there was no obvious way to do so.
Issue #2:
Other people are correct in how poor the tracking is... Half the time it sits still on the map, then finally jumps to my location, sometimes AFTER I was expecting a turn notification... The time it takes to reroute, I've already passed it's updated path. As mentioned, I've tried all navigation apps, and none give me this same issue. Therefore, all logic says, it's the app, not the phone.
Issue #3:
The POI list is horrendous! This app has NEVER found a POI I search for... Yep, NEVER! I've double checked spelling, city, everything, and it says nothing exists. Yet, I switch nav apps, and the others find the POI without issue, and validate that indeed I was typing the name and city correctly. Example? No "West Marine" store found in Marina Del Rey, California... Considering is a big store that I've shopped at for nearly 8 years, there is no excuse for not showing up. Nearby hotels were even missing, and I was searching "all categories"!
Lastly, not that it's truly an issue, but the text to speech speaks at whisper level. I can't even hear it over my air conditioning on low! Other speaking apps don't have this problem.
In my experieneced end-user opinion, this app is a rotten egg, and needs mzjor improvements and fixes to even come close to comparing to much better, less expensive nav apps.
Currently, and for many months now, my go to favorite is "GPS Drive" by Motion-X. It has a great UI, always finds POIs, and looks sharp. It doesn't do multiple waypoints, but I hear that it's coming. I've contacted their developer about a couple minor bugs, and i have always gotten a thank you and personal reply. They interact with their users on their facebook page, and its obvious they know who pays their paycheck by listening. And at a cost of just $3.00, it's a true bargain. Yes, turn by turn is $3 per month (discounted annual subscriptions available), it's worth it though to have a continuessly improved app, to me. It's a small price to pay, considering I spent $50 on navigon and the text to speech alone!
