OpenMaps is just an amazing map app. It is the best map app that is based on the open map data of OpenStreetMap.org, the free wiki world map.
OpenMaps has many functions which we like to call "tools". With the help of the Locate tool with just a single tap of a button you can view your current location on the map and examine what Points of Interest (POI) are around you. You can even tap on the POI icons on the map and view more info about them without needing to type and search for them. If you feel comfortable editing the map, e.g. you know the phone number of a hotel and want to add that so others can see it, well, you can do that too. By tapping on the Twitter tool you can scan the map for tweets around you. But it doesn't stop there, it is a full featured twitter client to keep track your timelines, view your friends' tweets on the map or tweet about places. Another great tool is the Download tool. It lets you download maps to your device which is a great feature for travelers who don't have Internet connection while on the go. These are just a few example use cases for OpenMaps and with the help of the Feedback tool you can have your say and point the developers in the direction that you want this app to take.

Map interface:
- Browse the default maps (OpenStreetMap, OpenCycleMap & OpenPisteMap) and add custom map types.
- Pinch, double tap with 1 finger and single tap with 2 fingers to zoom; drag with your finger to pan.
- Tap with 3 fingers to change quickly between the map types.
- Tap on POI icons on the map and view their info.
- Bookmark POIs, add them to your contacts and share them with others.
- Edit map data of OpenStreetMap.org (tag editing and node creation).
Locate tool (Free):
- See and continuously track your current location on the map.
- See where you are heading in 'Compass Tracking' mode if your device has a GPS or a magnetometer.
Twitter tool (Free, ad supported):
- Scan the map for tweets around you.
- Enjoy the full featured built-in twitter client to read your timelines, reply to tweets, view your friends' tweets on the map etc.
Search tool (Free):
- Search online the vast & feature rich map database of OpenStreetMap.org for streets, cities, POIs, addresses, coordinates etc.; E.g. searches: "paris", "hotel", "restaurant", "big ben london", "1 infinite loop california", "37.331689 -122.030731".
- Features bookmarks, recent searches and address search for your contacts.
Pin tool (Free):
- Drop pins (bookmarks) on the map.
- Touch and drag the bookmark pins to move them wherever you like.
- Touch and hold the Pin tool to access all your bookmarks quickly.
- Change the visibility, display name of any bookmark pin.
Route tool (YourNavigation Free; CloudMade one time purchase):
- View route info from 2 online routing service providers: YourNavigation.org and CloudMade.com.
- Choose between car, bicycle and pedestrian transport type; fastest or shortest route type.
- Convert any pin to the route's start, end or transit point.
- Features turn-by-turn route instructions (CloudMade only).
Download tool (One time purchase):
- Download maps to your device (please, don't abuse the community servers).
- Map tiles downloaded without this tool will be cached for 7 days, after that, if accessed, they will be redownloaded so your map will be up to date.
- Touch and hold the Download button to access and manage your downloads.
Feedback tool (Free):
- Submit bugs and feature requests right within the app.
- Vote on the ideas and talk about them with other users of OpenMaps.

What's New In Version 3.6
Version 3.6 is a feature release that contains new features such as the new Twitter tool, iOS 4 support, iPhone 4's Retina Display support, improved map interface interaction, user configurable custom map types, general offline mode, altered Locate tool behavior due to user feedback, coordinates search, copy and paste support and many other little things.
IMPORTANT: All your data, including your bookmarks, pins, downloads etc. will be deleted and reseted with this update. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Map interface:
- Fixed pinch zoom responsiveness issue.
- Added the ability to add custom map types.
- Added the ability to log out with your OpenStreetMap user.
Locate tool:
- Added 'Show' mode in which you can drag and zoom the map without the blue dot representing your last location fix to disappear.
Search tool:
- Added the ability to search for coordinates, e.g. search "37.331689 -122.030731".
More tool:
- Added the ability to touch and hold the table's rows and trigger the appropriate tool's long press function.
- Added a segment on the bottom to easily access those tools that don't have shortcuts on the map interface.
Route tool:
- Changed the availability of the turn-by-turn routing service of CloudMade from subscription fee based to one-time fee based.
- If you have an active subscription you will have this tool unlocked, however if you delete the app in the future you won't be able to restore your purchase and unlock the CloudMade routing service. In that case you have to purchase it for the one-time fee. Fortunately those kind of purchases can be restored by going to the Settings tool and pushing "Restore Purchases".
- We reserve the right to change these terms if the routing service providers change their terms of service.
Download tool:
- Disabled auto-lock during download. This way your downloads won't be aborted during long downloads.
Other:
- Added Twitter tool (browse tweets on the map, read your timelines, tweet about places, and many many more).
- Added iOS 4 support with fast app switching.
- Added support for iPhone 4's Retina Display with high resolution artwork.
- Added general 'Offline' mode.
- Added general touch and hold gesture to display a menu option (usually to copy an item).
- Fixed some user interface consistency issues.
- Subtle visual improvements.

Finally found a map app with free counterpart
With some of the other map applications (the ones that let you cache map data) there are no trial free versions to see what to expect. I downloaded one and it only worked with like 6 major US cities!
Please allow google map data
I like the full screen ui of this app but the map data from openmaps.org is very scarse. Not everything is on the map and its not something you should trust for directions. Please add the ability to use google map data instead of open maps.
Awesome map application
I like this app, because it's so easy to use and it has really cool features, like caching map data, viewing POI's OSM details etc.
