Heart

Heart

There’s a classy, well-sculpted quality to The City Harmonic’s sophomore album, inviting comparisons to such iconic bands as U2, Coldplay, and Keene. What’s most important about Heart, though, is the intensity of its Christian message, embodied in lyrics that combine personal testimony with corporate worship. Singer/keyboardist Elias Dummer avoids rock-star grandstanding as he leads his bandmates through atmospheric, slowly unfolding ballads and arena-sized anthems, fleshed out with tasteful electronica and ambient musical touches. The opening “Here & There” sets the tone for the album with its vivid invocation of spiritual rebirth. Big, celebratory praise songs like “Alive, Alive” and “Glory” gain impact from shimmering, Britpop-style arrangements; rootsy acoustic tracks like “Brand New” and “Long Walk Home” sing their praises in mellower but no less enraptured tones. Worthy of special notice are “Love, Heal Me” (sung with simple grace by bassist Eric Fusilier) and “1+1” (a celebration of marriage dressed up with swooning guitar and set to a waltz tempo). An ethereal reimagining of the hymn “My Jesus, I Love Thee” complements the band’s original tunes.
