Those Darlins

Those Darlins

This debut by Those Darlins is a contagious blend of Loretta Lynn, rockabilly, and roots music delivered with high energy and backed by sharp shuffle beats. Their concept is old-time country revival but their delivery displays deep rock and punk roots, and that combination comes across with rock ‘n’ roll grit especially well on revved up tunes such as “Red Light Love,” “Wild One,” and “Hung Up On Me.” On the flip side, “Mama’s Heart,” “Glass to You,” and “Snaggle Tooth Mama” come closer to whiskey-soaked honky tonk with a modern twist. Lead vocals are shared among three sassy singers, who also pull off some good three-part harmonies, as the Darlins offer clever, tongue-in-cheek lyrics about wild times, rural life, boozing, and boys. In addition to nine original songs the album contains two Carter Family covers, including a rocking version of “Who’s That Knockin’ at My Window,” and Uncle Dave Macon’s “Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy.” Charming and cheeky, Those Darlins deliver a good time indeed.
