Rize of the Fenix

Rize of the Fenix

When actor/musicians Jack Black and Kyle Gass were asked to submit a Clean version of Tenacious D’s third album, Rise of the Fenix, to iTunes, they tweaked the lyrics and rerecorded the tracks rather than using a censoring bleep or comical sound effects. The resulting album is equally funny as its Explicit source but for parallel reasons: by seamlessly substituting words like bagel, (arm)pit, or basses (as in the the fish) for far saltier ones, they keep the flow of the originals but with PG-13 references. From the mariachi-inspired “Señorita” to the theatricality of “Roadie” to the cheeky ‘70s power balladry of “39,” the duo continues to explore musical humor beyond the “acoustic guitar heavy metal” sound that initially characterized Tenacious D. The two skits are smile-inducing and the songs remain strong, with Dave Grohl on drums for a third time.
