Kiss / Kick

Kiss / Kick

Here's the thing: Broken Spindles was never meant to be more than a favor at first — a collection of cuts for a filmmaker friend of the Faint’s bassist, Joel Peterson. And yet here we are, figuring out Full-Length No. Five. (Four if you don’t count 2008’s Document Number One, a limited instrumental LP written for a 22-piece orchestra.) According to Peterson’s bio, Kiss / Kick is a “‘No Eyeliner’ record…more No Wave than new wave.” He’s half right. While no one can accuse Peterson of treading the same synth-draped dance-rock territory as his other band, his one-man wrecking crew isn’t exactly in the same atonal/arty orbit as Mars or DNA. Not when the creepy chords of “In the Dark” amount to actual hooks and the rest of the record presents paranoid android pop, a steel-plated mix of punchy drums, icy riffs, monochrome beats and moody vocals. You won’t be humming too much of it in your dreams, but Peterson’s black-lit soundscapes could slip into a nightmare or two.
