Kindred Spirits

Kindred Spirits

On his band’s first covers album, Clan of Xymox mastermind Ronny Moorings chose material by both his peers and inspirational musicians that preceded them. Kindred Spirits opens with a version of Shocking Blue’s “Venus.” An electro rhythm section and Moorings’ ominous vocal may remind listeners of fellow ‘80s dark-wavers Sisters of Mercy, whose early single “Alice” gets the Xymox treatment next. Some modern rock favorites are interpreted, including a minimalistic version of David Bowie’s anthem “Heroes” and a take on The Cure’s “A Forest” that blends programmed bass and drums with live guitars. “A Question of Time” is slightly heavier on guitar than the Depeche Mode original, while Radiohead’s late 20th-century standard “Creep” gets a keyboard-oriented overhaul.
