Having cut his teeth spinning records at Fugees 99, a Nigerian-owned dance club in Buenos Aires, Body High label head and DJ Sam Griesemer mixes his love for Chicago house, crunk, and club music into his 2012 debut EP under the Samo Sound Boy moniker. 5 Dollar Paradise opens with the hard-thumping title track, which has a heavy four-on-the-floor beat that segues into cut-up loops of vocal snippets pitched up and then distorted down before the beats take on metallic resonance. The following “Watch Me Ride” clangs and bangs with what could very well be samples from the percussive dance troupe Stomp. This is nicely contrasted with wonky chirps and squiggles from a vintage analog synthesizer and soulful samples of a female singer. When it all comes together, the sonic alchemy is very rooted in late-'80s and early-'90s Chicago house, but it hardly resorts to retro rehashing. The production and arrangements are very innovative and unpredictable here and in “Drive Time,” which is five minutes and six seconds of inventive rhythm manipulation set to antiquated tones.
