Another Time, Another Place: Timeless Christian Classics

Avalon’s Another Time, Another Place is a satisfying project on several levels. The quartet celebrates its roots by reviving some well-chosen Christian hits by other artists. Just as significantly, this album serves to remind Christian music fans of the genre’s growth over the past three decades. Rather than simply embracing the past, though, Avalon offers creative interpretations of these familiar tunes, including a groove-driven reading of Michael Card’s “El Shaddai” and a bold, almost psychedelic rock rendition of Twila Paris’ “God Is In Control.” The album’s stylistic perimeters are broadly-drawn, extending from the traditional gospel of 4Him’s “Basics of Life” to the intricate pop of Wayne Watson’s “Friend of a Wounded Heart” and the serene balladry of the Sandy Patti-penned title song. The lyrics are likewise diverse, extending from praise numbers (“Thy Word,” ”The Reason We Sing”) to messages of hope for the spiritually empty (“People Need the Lord”) and calls for unity in Christ (“We Will Stand”). Avalon put their own stamp on these favorites, with Janna Long and Melissa Greene turning in vibrant solo moments. Classic material and fiery performances combine to make Another Time, Another Place more than an exercise in nostalgia.
