The artists’ credit on In Christ Alone goes to Bethany Dillon & Matt Hammitt, but the name above the title ought to read “John Mark Painter.” In the role of arranger/producer, Painter (formerly with the duo Fleming and John) takes some real creative risks in framing this collection of modern hymns. The songs here — written by such Christian music notables as Martin Smith, Matt Maher and Stuart Townsend — boast richly reverent lyrics matched with gracefully-sculpted melodies evocative of 19th-century hymnody. Painter orchestrates them with elaborate string and horn parts that are often compelling, sometimes kitschy and always inventive. Of the two featured singers, Sanctus Real vocalist Hammitt has the best moments, delivering such tracks as “Adoration,” “In the Cross Alone I Glory” and “The Wonder of the Cross” with a blend of dignity and fervor. Folk-pop artist Dillon turns in some fine performances as well, shining especially on “On the Third Day.” While the emphasis here is on worship, “God of Justice” offers a ringing call to social activism. A stirring collection of sacred songs done with artistic flair.
