What the hell is this?!

by xkenneyx

Wow. Garbage. This truly breaks my heart. I loved Cuban Ballerina, and I LOVED Little Brother, but this is just bad. There are a couple of passable songs like "Cruel World" or "Modern Muse" but that would be about it. The song "Blue" is a joke and I can't stand it. What a fall from grace this band made, hopefully it's a sophomore slump, but it doesn't seem that way. Such a bummer. Dead To Me could have been a saving grace for punk rock. Cheers.

Still Solid

This is definitely a different sound than Cuban Ballerina, but Dead to Me is still strong. I'm sad they lost Jack, but at the same time I think Nathan does great on this album. His songwriting lags way behind Chicken and Jack's, but the songs themselves are still catchy and pretty solid. But I'd say anything Nathan lacks in songwriting he more than makes up for in performance: these guys all put on a hell of a show. Chicken is still fantastic, and his lyrics are deeper than ever, even referencing Jung and Nietzsche. He is a brilliant songwriter and musician, and it really shows. All in all, I still liked Cuban Ballerina more, but African Elephants is definitely still worth your time.

Hmmm...

Ok, so I enjoyed this album a lot and would recommend it to anybody who is into any other fat wreck type bands. That being said...It really isn't as good as cuban balleriena to me. Jack was the best songwriter of the bunch and brilliant songs of his like "don't lie" are missing. However, I think that chicken's songwriting has gotten better since that cd. Most of his songs are great. Nathan's songs dont really stand out much to me, but while listening to the album as a whole, they really help the record and it's overall impression. buy it.
