Reckless Habits

Reckless Habits

Tasty licks, Southern-fried grooves and a bodacious attitude are the order of the day on Great American Taxi’s sophomore album Reckless Habits. It’s easy to see why this Colorado-based group has become a favorite on the jam band circuit — they offer enough freewheeling improvisation to light up any diehard Deadhead’s heart. Lead singer/guitarist Vince Herman sets a hearty tone for the album, holding forth on rollicking tracks like “Fuzzy Little Hippie Girl” and “One of These Days” with scruffy aplomb. The band catches the right mood of woozy regret on “Unpromised Land” and “New Madrid,” then turns around to deliver smile-inducing honky tonk numbers like “Good Night to Boogie” and “Get No Better.” Crisp, vigorous renditions of Bill Monroe’s “Big Sandy River” and their own “American Beauty” capture the group’s often dazzling chemistry as an ensemble. The title track — a tribute to country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons — makes GAT’s spiritual roots explicit. Even if you’re allergic to tie-dye, Reckless Habits provides a sustained jolt of virtuosic playing and irresistible good vibes.
