Gentleman Ruffin

Gentleman Ruffin

The former Temptations singer had personal demons, but they never ruined his ability to convey true gravity and emotion. Helmed by legendary Detroit producer Don Davis, this 1980 album has a song selection and overall execution that's pretty near perfect, from the funky “Still in Love with You” to the slinky “Love Supply.” Davis added a sonic backdrop of gentle horns, stirring strings, and slow and sexy dancefloor beats to accent Ruffin’s smooth and amatory side. When Ruffin sings “I had to kiss you in my dreams” on “All I Need,” there’s real sadness, especially when one considers this was his final solo album.
