So Far ... The Acoustic Sessions

So Far ... The Acoustic Sessions

Bethany Dillon’s girlish yet forceful vocals and spiritually perceptive songwriting have earned her a growing following among Christian music fans. 2008’s So Far: The Acoustic Sessions allows her to reinterpret previously-recorded material in unadorned fashion. Dillon’s earlier albums have dressed up her tunes in modern folk/pop arrangements suggestive of Shawn Colvin or Patty Griffin’s less abrasive moments. This time, Bethany tosses out the fancy production and soft-pedals her sound, letting the smoky lower end of her range convey a welcome intimacy on tunes like “Top of the World,” “Beautiful,” and “Dreamer.” “The Kingdom” and “Hallelujah” shine in quieter settings, sounding less like radio-ready modern hymns and more like personal prayers. Dillon gives every indication of becoming an enduring singer/songwriter with secular crossover potential. If So Far doesn’t break new ground, it does showcase her musical strengths and winsome personality with a minimum of studio gloss.
