Veteran scenesters who have played in the Distillers, Lyres, Nerve Agents, and the Fall, Darker My Love rarely give away their Los Angeles roots. The lilting harmonies padding “Two Ways Out” or the bright shimmer of “Pale Sun” begs a nod towards the Beach Boys, however, everything this five-piece touches eventually turns to a machine-like growl as the band pays most of its respects to the walls of feedback that have lined the sound of the Velvet Underground, Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. “Blue Day” is the sound of a factory being turned inside out, a pop nugget caked in soot and grime. For their second album, DML also take time to stop and smell the lysergic acid, as “Immediate Undertaking” and “All the Hurry and Wait” slow things to a contemplative pulsing, suggesting the band occasionally visits nature on its off days from the factory — or at least has a chance to expand its sonic attack when Will Canzoneri’s organ and clavinet moves towards centerstage.
