Hell Hymns - EP

Hell Hymns - EP

Released on the esteemed indie rock label Merge Records, Hell Hymns is the kind of old-school four-song EP that recalls punk's early days, when kids pressed up 500 copies of vinyl and squeezed what they could into the grooves. The energy is first and foremost, and the musicianship is solid but deliberately left raw. The copyright date should read 1983 more than 2013, but then punk rock done right never goes out of date. Formed in December 2011, this all-girl punk quartet features friends and former bandmates from the modestly locally popular Lazy Janes: singer/guitarist Carla Wolff and drummer Ash Van Eijk. The duo added untutored keyboardist Jenny Williams (she's learning on the job!) and bassist Fran Araya and for playing around the Raleigh, N.C., punk scene. Their immediate success is a sign that Barren Girls have a charm worthy of a full-length album, though the quick two-minute bite of "Deal with the Devil" is as good as it gets.
