Horrible, or horribly delicious?

Have you ever wondered what it would sound like if some grungy, dreamy black metal band stopped emulating Darkthrone and started emulating The Cure or My Bloody Valentine? No? Well then. Don't buy this CD. But if you've ever looked at your copies of Ulver's Bergtatt and Christian Death's Catastrophe Ballet and wished that you could somehow mash them together to form some candy-like amalgam of BM gloom and...er...Goth gloom...well then: Amesoeurs is the band for you. Brainless Disney pop for suicidal agoraphobes (?)

It's Different, But That Dosen't Mean Its Bad

So what, if this band doesn't have the same style as emperor or mayhem, these guys are obviously really talented and are very creative in a genre that doesn't have a alot of new ideas these days. it's really a shame these guys broke up becuase they really had something going.

Pleasantly Dark...Darkly Gorgeous

Really not a black metal CD for the most part, though there are blastbeats, shrieked vocals in some parts, the lions share of the black metal mark on this album is the atmosphere. This bleak atmosphere is fused with what i feel is a very 80's sound, with heavy influence from the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. It works surprisingly well, the mixing of darkness and bleakness with upbeat and sunny feelings in varying degrees for great variety, which is one thing this CD has no shortage of. I really found Troubles (Eveils infames) and Video Girl unimpressive, and La Reine Trayuse marred by some unneccesary screaming at the end (the screaming works far better on Heurt), but it is balanced by some sure-fire winners like the perfectly balanced Les Ruches Malades, the fast paced Heurt, the sunny Faux Semblants, the attitude of Amesoeurs, the harrowing opener Gas In Veins, and the heart-crushing ender Au Crepuscule de nos reves.

In short, really not a black metal album but i loved it anyway and i think it would appeal to many black metal fans, especially for the richness of atmosphere. Some tracks were unimpressive, but the winners won in every way and were especially memorable. 4/5 Umlauts fo sho!
