Our Graceful Words

Our Graceful Words

With thunderous riffs and expansive vocals, Sent by Ravens forge a compelling alloy of heavy post-grunge rock. On their debut album the Columbia, South Carolina-based quintet delivers its message of unity and salvation with an unrelenting twin-guitar assault. Zach Riner is an unusually expressive singer, versatile enough to shift from clear-toned vocalizing to throat-shredding eruptions, sometimes within the same tune. Relentlessly churning tracks like “New Fire” and “Trailer vs. Tornado” temper raw brutality with unexpected finesse. Riner and his bandmates channel their sonic rage into confessions of weakness and doubt, as in “An Honest Heart” and “This Awakening.” Worthy of special attention is the reverent “Salt and the Light,” a yearning rock ballad. As producers, Aaron Sprinkle and Emery guitarist Matt Carter emphasize both melody and muscle in these tracks, keeping things direct and uncluttered. For all of its hard edges, Our Graceful Words is an album filled with empathy and forgiveness, tender at its seething core.
