No one has ever accused Steven Curtis Chapman of being the flashiest act in Christian music. It’s been solid talent and stylistic adaptability that’s kept him one of the genre’s most consistent hitmakers. Chapman hasn’t lost his creative edge, as 2004’s All Things New makes clear. The singer/songwriter’s trademarks are in evidence: intelligent, non-judgmental lyrics, cleanly-shaped melodies, pop/rock arrangements that give a nod to the latest musical trends without surrendering to them. He adds a dash of fresh excitement by featuring some guests stars this time, among them Third Day’s Mac Powell (contributing vocals to “Believe Me Now”) and blues guitarist Johnny Lang (who lends his slinky slide touch to “Only Getting Started).” Chapman’s most impressive accomplishment, though, is his ability to keep a sense of awe and reverence alive in his writing. In many ways, he’s still the wide-eyed youngster who began declaring his faith almost twenty years earlier. Songs like the title tune and “Big Story” are worshipful expressions sung from the perspective of an ordinary believer.
