Album Review
In 1999, Annie and her boyfriend/producer, Erot, made a slippery-sexy single called "The Greatest Hit." Though it came out of Norway, it sounded more than a little American, sampling Madonna's "Everybody" while also echoing the nonchalant ecstasy of Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots." It didn't take off, at least not in the traditional sense. It floated around the underground, saw release on labels in different territories, and eventually became a pseudo-secret smash. Within a couple years, dancers and DJs in a few countries began to wonder what became of Annie. Erot's life was claimed by a heart defect in 2001; his partner, quite understandably, went quiet for a while. She picked herself up, took a very active role in the Bergen, Norway, music community, and recorded Anniemal with production help from Richard X, Röyksopp, and Op:L Bastards' Timo Kaukolampi. "The Greatest Hit," thankfully reprised here, is indicative of the album as a whole, bursting with sparkling melodies (often spiked with just a hint of melancholy) over mostly danceable rhythms that are either wholly modern or mischievously referential to early-'80s club hits (Tom Tom Club, the Human League, Arthur Russell's Dinosaur L). Annie's voice might be a little thin, but that's no real factor when it's so sweet and likable. The topics — teasing, aching, longing — aren't unfamiliar, yet they're often dealt with in a clever manner. Take "Chewing Gum," in which a dumped boy gets sort of objectified and verbally slain at the same time ("You think you're chocolate when you're chewing gum"), or "The Greatest Hit," containing the most foolproof come-on you could ever give a record geek ("C'mon, baby, you're my greatest hit"). As cunning as it is, Anniemal is also deeply affecting. "Heartbeat" is the least resistible of all, glowing with anticipatory pulses, tremulous sighs, and quivering electric piano vamps.
Customer Reviews
Pure pop, pure fun.
Annie is not revolutionary by any means. In frank terms, her record does not break any new musical ground and her voice does not exceed two or three octaves, but the bouncy cotton candy sweetness of her debut LP, "Anniemal" is enough to warrant its purchase. From the catchy "Chewing Gum," the infectiously sweet "Heartbeat," the disco jam "Greatest Hit," and even the sullen tribute to her deceased lover, "My Best Friend," the album is spilling over with immense heart and soul... and not a drop of cynicism to be found. A superb example of pop music and one of the best acts of 2005.
Chewing Gum (Pop!!)
If you've heard through all of the CD, you've probably figured out that CD is about as bubblegummy pop as you can get without having to resort to Baby One More Time, which is a flashback to hear, considering that most of this style of pop left this world in late 2000. It brings back memories of Gum, Pink Ponytails, Boy Bands, and innocent little girls who "oops! I showed my belly button!". This CD is still pretty good, if you have good patience, and by that I'm talking to anyone's who has hit over 13 yet. This CD is good for the younger female audiences ages 4-14 and possibly the gay audience (by saying that, I am not dissing gay people, but rather that some of this audience may enjoy it). Overall though, pretty good Annie, and I can't wait to hear more from you!
Must-have album for the year!!
You first heard this artist on Free Music Tuesdays, but her album is the best! It reminds you of funky pop 80's music! "Greatest Hit" is a good track whereas "My Best Friend" is nice and low-key. "Always too late" is a sleeper hit (in my opinion). "Chewing Gum" is the best. If you don't buy this album, then you are seriously missing out on a star on the rise. If you want more, listen the DJ Kicks album, " Flextone" and "Bongo Song" rocks! Hands down, my best purchase yet.
