I Want What You Want

I Want What You Want

The fifth studio album by New York singer/songwriter Jennifer O’Connor plays with the close intimacy of a personal serenade. With just an acoustic guitar and a wistful voice, “Another Day (My Friend)” muses on the “what ifs” that get in the way of accepting regret and moving on. Then she plugs into what sounds like an old tube amplifier on “Already Gone.” With a simple but solid rhythm section backing her, the tune turns into something special; it harks back to the days of early-'90s college rock, when bands like Heavenly and Tiger Trap crafted catchy, clever indie pop with an effectively minimalist approach. The similarly catchy “You Come Around” boasts dueling hooks: the first comes from a grappling guitar lead and the second protrudes from O’Connor’s clever chorus melodies. A waltzing rhythm gives “Hidden Hill” a leisurely stroll as O’Connor sings sweetly sublime self-harmonies while harmonica, droning accordion, and nostalgic lyrics give the tune a timeless feel. Some warbling Wurlitzer notes lend “Your Guitar” a warm and antiquated sound.
