Prophet

Prophet

Though more than just a one-man band, Ramona Falls primarily exists to realize the intricate musical vision of multi-instrumentalist Brent Knopf, formerly of Menomena. He offers his most revealing work yet on Prophet, a collection of complex yet eminently catchy songs that teem with expansive musical gestures and soul-baring lyric insights. Knopf is adept at interweaving varied instrumental textures on top of dynamic, expertly wrought melodic lines. The tinkling acoustic sounds of “Proof” contrast with the heavy rock guitar crunch of “Brevony”; the rumbling piano line of “Squorm” lifts the album into near-operatic realms. Tracks like the buoyant “Archimedes Plutonium” and the softly galloping “The Space Between Lightning and Thunder” deliver straight-ahead pop pleasure that carries a quirky undertaste. Knopf’s honeyed, almost naïve vocals give his mixture of fanciful language and honest sentiment real poignancy. Whether he’s yearning for family in “Spore” or awaiting salvation in “Helium,” he takes Prophet beyond mere cleverness to create an emotionally meaningful work.
