Gore, guts, viscera — it’s spattered all over the tracks on the Used’s Artwork. The Utah-based quintet's fourth album immerses itself in emotional carnage, conveyed by a sound fusing early-‘70s British metal with latter-day hardcore. As before, singer Bert McCracken manages to infuse his vocal eruptions with more sincerity than most of his peers. Tracks like the maniacal “Blood On My Hands,” the bleak “Sold My Soul,” and the harrowing “Meant to Die” seethe with inward-directed rage, driven home by Quinn Allman’s lead guitar slashes. The band rides swells and eddies of negative energy, emerging from the roar of “Men Are All the Same” and “On the Cross” like battered warriors. Naturally, the love songs here have a harsh edge, though “Kissing You Goodbye” manages to actually sound pretty as well as tormented. The band achieves particular grandeur on “The Best of Me,” tempering moody passages with bursts of all-out screamo abandon. Overall, Artwork gushes with unquenchable rage, yet contains enough tunefulness to entice the faint of heart.

The Used Recycled and Redone
The Used is a great band. With this new release they take all of the old sounds and blend them perfectly. There is some of their harder sounds from the first album shown on songs like "Blood on My Hands" and "The Best of Me" along with the pop sound from their second album on songs like "Watered Down" and "Kissing You Goodbye". They also bring in their newer sound from Lies for the Liars on songs like "Empty With You" and "Come Undone". Not only are there recycled sounds but the Used brings in their new matured sound in too without dissapointment. Another good thing about Artwork is that there are no filler songs that are there just to fill the empty space...every song is good and though it takes a few listens to get the full extent of the album, Artwork is The Used's most developed and best album to date.
Best Album I've bought in Years
I am a big fan of The Used, but even I have to admit that their albums have been steadily declining in quality since their original self-titled album. I went out and bought this CD yesterday with a little bit of hesitance, but can confidently say this is as good or better than their first album. I have not been this impressed with an album since "The Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance. This is one of the few albums I've ever owned that I can listen to every single song and enjoy them all. I honestly can say I don't have a least favorite track on this album because they are all such entertaining songs and so well written. That is where I believe they succeeded the most with this album is that they managed to create an entire album full of potential singles instead of a few great songs and some filler. This is without a doubt the #1 album of 2009 in my opinion and I would recommend it to anybody who likes alternative rock or rock in general because there's a good chance you'll find a song on this album you like. I give this a 100/100
Finally!
I've been wiating for this album for literally like a year now and I'm so excited its finally here! after listening to it 5 or 6 times I have to say that that the used's fourth lacks some of that mysterious creativity that made songs like the bird and the worm and all that i've got some of my favorites of all time. With that being said, this album is way heavier and more intense than most of what these guys have done in the past but I love it!
1. Blood on my hands- 7/10 kind of disapointed with it being the first single and all but still a pretty solid song with an insane guitar riff at the beginning.
2. Empty with you- 7/10 decent song with a good chorus. lyrics don't really flow in some places thogh...
3. Born to Quit- 8/10 one-ups blood on my hands with an amazing pre-chorus and I really like the lower register of Bert's voice in the bridge.
4. Kissing you goodbye- 9/10 the Smother Me of artwork definitely with an amazing melody and great lyrics. the piano is a little ruff in places but I love when the used use a piano, sweet.
5. Sold my soul- 9/10 one of the best tracks on the album. has a stunning chorus that really gets through your head. love the bridge and the ending is incredible, it could be a whole other song
6. Watered down- 8/10 for this one they kind of barrowed the sound they used for lies for the liars which I liked a lot. I think this track could have been better but it was still pretty good.
7. On the cross- 7/10 kind of wears me out in places. the last half is by far the best.
8. Come undone- 9/10 very intense and loud with great, angry lyrics like "i'll be the end that you deserve" one of the best on the cd
9. Meant to die- 10/10 WOW this song is incredible. incredible guitar, lyrics, and the bridge is just unreal, great job with this one best song on the album.
10. The Best of me- 5/10 ugh this may be the worst song the used have ever made. it gets a five purely because it has decent lyrics.
11. Men are all the same- 9/10 this song really gets stuck in my head with really cool lyrics and a very heavy chorus. I love how they brought kissing you goodbye into the bridge and weaved the two choruses together. Artwork
12. On my own- same great song from their first album just accoustic and with the singing not touched up. I do really like how vulnerable bert's voice is in this though

14. Lunacy Fringe- I really like the original and I would definitely recomend it (the original that is) this version just doesn't sound as good
15. Mosh 'n church- 9/10 not really sure I get the title but this is a pretty sweet song. awesome chorus good closer
overall I give this album an eight but I would definitely recomend it. this is some really great stuff from one of my favorite bands. and if you don't want to buy the whole thing you should at least buy the following
