Sprout Official Soundtrack

To gather music for a flick about soul surfing, it would've been easy to get some old Hawaiian-shirted kooks playing all the familiar instrumentals on vintage Fender gear with the reverb cranked. But director, artist, and surfer Thomas Campbell never goes about things the easy way. To accompany the stellar footage filmed for Sprout he took a cue from the 1971 classic surf movie Morning of the Earth and recruited original songs from hip, young artists to make for a listening experience that almost upstages the visual one. Like the soundtrack to Morning of the Earth, many of these musicians actually surf. Living in Cornwall, England, Neil Halstead has to ride some pretty cold waves — but here he opens with a warm version of "Two Stones In My Pocket." Professional skateboard legends (and recreational surfers) Ray Barbee and Tommy Guerrero contribute as well. Barbee's "Find Enjoyment" pulses on a post-rock foundation that recalls Tortoise but with a sunny, jazzy guitar thrown on top. Guerrero grooves with a danceable drum beat that holds up breezy six-string leads and garagey Farfisa organ riffs. Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval may not have never surfed Hawaii's North Shore, but her dreamy and slow-burning "On the Low" is a welcome addition.
