Clare Manchon has a voice that can ward off—or call for—evil spirits. Her spellcasting ability is obvious, and her backing group is getting weirder by the arrangement, far beyond what a trio can typically accomplish. Members of the Orchestre de Paris and drummer James McAlister make their presence known with arrangements that are busy but never cluttered. The album itself was recorded in Berlin, where the band spent eight months writing, recording, and traveling by motor scooter. (The album title and cover celebrate a vintage German vehicle.) "Bass Face" throws the rhythms off-balance, while "This Too Shall Pass" pounds away at a tribal groove that's as ominous as the horn section. "The Mauerpark" has its roots in mystical folk that recalls The Incredible String Band. "Colder" captures an avant-garde classical vibe from the piano, showing just how restless these young musicians can get. They sound as if they're jumping out of their skins, excited at the prospect of finding new language within the same 12 tones as the rest of the western world.
