I Couldn't Find You

I Couldn't Find You

Fiercely independent as ever, the Stone Coyotes continue their streak of whip-smart, hard-rocking releases with I Couldn’t Find You. Since the late ‘90s, this family trio has won a legion of devotees thanks to its blues-based musicianship and uncompromising attitude. Front woman Barbara Keith cuts a commanding presence as a singer/songwriter/slide guitarist. Adding muscle are husband Doug Tibbles’ punishing drums and stepson John Tibbles’ ferocious lead guitar and anchor-solid bass. What really gives the Stone Coyotes their distinct identity are their songs — this time out, tracks like “I Can Hear You,” “A Shot Across the Bow” and “Blood-suckin’ Son of a Gun” combine snarling ZZ Top-style riffage with biting, often sardonically funny lyrics. Keith is capable of offering ominous Western tales (“My Horses Were Gone”), mournful honky-tonk weepers (“Memory Lane”) and life-affirming anthems (“Before We Go”) with equal aplomb. The dramatic folk balladry of “The Palace of the King” is reminiscent of her work as a late ‘60s solo artist.
